Time Slip Review

Ok, I went out to the track last night and i did better than last time but still not good enough.
I was able to make 12 passes for the night and my best time slip was as follows.
(also keep in mind i am 262.5 lbs suited)

R/T .184
60'.......1.931
330......4.747
1/8........6.977
MPH.....109.90
1000.....8.902
1/4.......10.559
MPH.....135.44

Out of the 12 passes my best 60' was 1.776 but due to a different error (short shift) my et was 10.596 @ 129.69. That pass felt solid but i screwed it up about 1/2 track.
I started off the evening launching at 4500 - 5k and it kept bogging down right off the line. So i bumped it up to 6k for my last 3 passes. After i started launching at 6k the bog went away. The last 3 passes felt very solid and smooth but still not enough improvement. The track was sticky and i was not spinning at all (so i could tell). As soon as i was getting comfortable with launching at 6k the track was closing for the night (figures).

What do you think? Any insight on something i may be missing or not paying close enough attention to? I know i am "Gravitationally Challenged" and i am not expecting to hit 8 seconds at 150mph. I am looking to at least hit 9.999, I know it is possible...

Thanks in advance
Patrick

Your 1/4 mile trap speed of 135.44 mph seems low to me.

You should be in the 140's or near 150mph to get near your goal.

Are you going thru the finish in 4th gear?

Since i swapped to a 16t front i am into 4th when i go through the traps. Before i went to a 16t i could hang in 3rd and run through the traps. I would hit the limiter right after i went through the traps. Now if i try to stay in 3rd i hit the limiter about 200 - 250 feet before the traps (guestimation).

Patrick what rpm do you have your shift light set at? Did you find the Zepher front sprocket,or did you end up with a howler Vortex or similar?

i have the shift light set at 11k, and unfortunately i went with the Vortex sprocket. It was available and on the shelf so i didnt have to wait. I really dont notice the howling much unless i am in 1st or 2nd decelerating to a stop in town. I am going to look at my options the next few days and i may just swap back to the 17t front and give the track a shot again. I thought i would see more of a difference with dropping to a 16. Or i could just be completely missing something. Not for sure yet...

Also even though the light is set at 11k when i looked to see what i was shifting at the tach was reading around 11500 or just before. I generally shift by sound and feel versus watching the tach. Just something i have gotten used to. Should i be shifting sooner?

You won't run 150 mph. I would guess at 143-144. One thing to focus on is getting wot as early as possible.

Getting to wot well before i hit the 60' mark was my focus last night.... The issue i was having is the bike was bogging down right when i got to wot. I started to slip the clutch a bit more and it got better. Then i started launching at 6k and slip the clutch a bit and the launched felt better and it felt like i was reaching wot sooner. I think I need to talk someone into shooting video of my runs so i can review myself and see where i am going wrong.

I think it is the aspect i am telling my self what to do but doing something else instead.

Patrick are you still using the clutch when you shift? If you are that may be why your mph is off so much. If memory serves me my only trip to the track I have so far was 6.40 something at 116 or 118 mph,and I am 220lbs without my gear. You do need some video so some of the regular drag racers here can help you out.

It sounds as if he's somewhere where the altitude is high. I'd expect better at his weight as well.

the only time i am using the clutch is the initial launch, Other than that i dont touch it. I will talk to Jenn and see if she can shoot video of me next tuesday.

After some research the elevation of the track sits at 869 feet above sea level.

Patrick

Peyton, I am interested to see some pics, I bet they are awesome!!

One thing to consider is the air. Our track is 242ft above sea level but the corrected alltitude(air) will often be at 1800-2500.

A video of yourself is one of the best ways to see for yourself what your doing wrong.

your gearing is killing you -- if you want to run faster get out of the hole and put a bigger rear sprocket on . AT NHDRO in indy i was 265 suited and went 9.15 16/48 gearing shifting at 10,000

If i were to add a 45 or 46t rear sprocket what would i lose on legnth? I do not want to add links to the chain mainly because i do not have the equipment to do it. I am currently sitting at 5&1/2 over. I would not object to adding a rear sprocket mainly due to the fact i could change it out on track day to maintain street ability.

What do you guys think i would be looking at wheel base wise? Would it help aid me in getting my 60' down as well?

How far forward on your extensions can you slide the axle? The sprocket with more teeth will shorten your wheelbase is what I am saying.

i have a good 3" or so i could move the axle forward. My only fear is i will have to trim the chain guard bracket off if i go too far forward. I have the wheel set far enough back that i did not have to trip the bracket. If i have to i will do it, but i would prefer not to.

Two up on the rear sprocket is about equall to 3\4 of the 1 down you did on the front sprocket. It wouldn't optimize your gearing for the track, but wuld be a big help. The good thing about the 43 tooth is its a great street gear over stock while still being streetable with the stock 17 tooth front. The really sweet part is it will fit your stock chain at swb. It will have the axle all the way forward, but it fits and the short wheelbase handles really good.on whatlittle twistys you have there,I've spent a lot of time in Indy. It will clear your chain gaurd too.

hmmm.. well as it sits currently with the extensions i only have about 3/4 to an inch on space before the tire hits the tab for the chain guard mount. i think if i were to go up on the rear sprocket i would go ahead and cut that bracket off the swing arm. I wasnt sure about clearance so i just checked a bit ago...

Post a pic of where you think the tire will rub Patrick. I can't see it in my minds eye.
