Hi Guys
I have just joined your site as a member although I have been following your comments for some time now when I had my ZX 10 R.
I sold my 10R in Dec 09 and have just bought a Black zx 14 07,and yes for me it is a much better bike I really love it.
We need some assistance with a buddy,s 08 Zx 14 which he has just done some mod's on.The head has been flowed with cams and compression,the bike made 167 on a dyno Jet before mods and ran 197mph with standard gearing(11200 rpm). After the mods the bike made 191 on the same dyno with one tooth dropped at the rear sprocket the bike pulled very strong through all the gears but in 6th still battled to pull 11000rpm with the same rider 65 kg ,the confusing part is that the bike ran basically the same speed ,this was all done on the same road.The bike has a Full Muzzy pipe, BMC with power commander and deristrictor
The guy that did the mods said mabye the cam timming has moved ,is this possible and what should the timming and degrees be.
Any advice

It's not unusual to get a different result on another day at the same road or track. There are a few things which will cause this, apart from the bike set-up, such as wind speed, air temperature, air pressure and the rider himself. How was the speed measured?
Also you changed possibly too many things at once, it would have been a fairer test of the engine mods to run the same gearing first of all, If you hit the limiter in 6th - then change to the 40 tooth.
For comparison my 2006 14 made similar power and ran 203.1mph at 10650rpm geared 17/40. I weigh around 90kg in shorts.
We are talking accurate electronic or GPS timing here aren't we? Not speedo speeds. I'm asking because according to my gearing tables a true 11,200 rpm in 6th geared 17/41 would be 208.4mph and beyond the engine rev limiters 10800rpm. The bikes speedo and tacho are both VERY optimistic, most people reckon 6 or 7%.

Yes BobC we used a GPS ,the bike was tested after the mods on the dyno with stock gearing and it ran rev limiter 315 km/h ,that's why we dropped one tooth at the rear.So are you saying that the bike will only rev to a true 10800rpm on the road and not a indicated 11200rpm .The speed that you ran 203.1 mph ( 324 km/h) is what they told us we will run after the mod in fact we were told you can run that speed with a standard bike (pipe,filter ,pc,derestricter) with 17/40 gearing ,so if this very confusing calculation makes any sense does that mean cam timing or feuling is wrong

On standard gearing at a true 10800rpm the bike will do a true 201mph (323.4km/h). If the bike hit the rev limiter on the dyno at 315km/h you must have had slippage somewhere, probably wheelspin, because that's only 195.7mph.
For top speed runs, we use a one-mile section of a two-mile runway and an electronic speed trap, I usually change up at an indicated 11,300rpm which is just before I feel the engine rpm limiter. That gives an idea of how optimistic the bike's tacho is.
It's hard for me to guess from here why the bike is slower after modification. You should be able to see what the fuelling is like on the Dyno because it has a wideband oxygen sensor to measure air/fuel ratio, that will have a big effect on power if it's wrong. As for cam timing, if the guy who did the mods said "maybe it moved" you need to ask if it was dialled in after the head-work, it should have been. But it made 191bhp which is not bad.
If you want my guess as to why the modified bike was slower, I say that the weather conditions on that particular day prevented it pulling to the red line in 6th on 17/40 gearing - but that's just a guess.

Thanx for the input BobC we will check the fuel/air ratio and mabye run a 55 profile aswell

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

The deristrictor is a local unit they use here in South Africa maybe I should import the correct one from Rickey at Adams Performance ,the guy that did the mods will be doing some tests this week on the bike he has built some very fast busa's and 14's sure he will sort it out ,will keep you posted

Hi guys we are still confused with our 14 ,we went back to standard gearing 17/41 50 profile tyre the bike pulls better through the gears but still struggles in 6th to hit rev limiter on the same road with same rider indicated 11 200rpm GPS 315 km/h, this brings me back to original question has the cam timming not moved ,if so what cam timming do you guys use

Just some feed back we have sorted our problem it was a faulty speed derestrictor the bike runs very well it hits limiter in 6th no problem 323km/h 50 profile tyre I must say I am very impressed with this bike's performance

Now that you have the problem sorted out.. LET US KNOW the outcome against that big bore ZX-10 & 1400cc Busa????
