Noise & Possible "Fix"
Ok...so I've been doing some thinking about the noisy drive train on my 2007.
Doing some research on the interwebs and one of the upgrades that Kawi made in 2008 was to add a damper and extra plate between the drive sprocket and the chain cover.
I'm thinking that this *has* to reduce the amount of noise I am getting from this area.
So, I'm *thinking* I want to try removing the chain cover from my '07 and replace it with one from an '09. At the same time, I'd add the "chain guard damper" and "plate" that Kawi added for the '08 models and up.
I've called a couple of Kawi shops in the area, and of course no one has ever mentioned this let alone tried it.
Any thoughts or comments?
It *appears* to be a simple bolt-on, but you never know.
Anyone else think of a way I could find out if these '09 parts will fit my '07?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Cheers,
Rob

Yep...Akropovic.
The noise is heard on decel. around 2K RPM...so loud pipes don't drown it out if that's what you were getting at?

I took the dampner off of my 09' for weight savings. It is a very hefty piece for what it does. Take your sprocket cover off and see if thier are mounting holes. I doubt it since the 06-07 models did not come with it.

Noise on front sprocket??...........do you have a Kawasaki OEM front sprocket?
Are you sure you have a good chain and sprockets? Adjusted and lubed correctly?
My 2007 is fine, or my old ears are going deaf :-) 9,000 miles on stock chain I clean
and lube every tank of gas when chain is still hot from a long ride.

Hmmm...wanna sell your damper to me?
:-)
Does it mount to the engine block or the sprocket cover?

If I recall it mounts to the block with 3 6mm bolts. Check and see if you have the holes for it and I'll ship you mine. Obviously there was a noise problem on the 06-07 or they would not have added it to the newer models.

Guess my loud exhaust hides the noise.

It could, or maybe your bike doesn't have this issue.
I have talked to about 4 or 5 guys on various boards who have experienced the same symptoms.
To answer your questions regarding the chain & sprockets on my bike, they are the original OEM sprockets & chain.
The bike currently has about 7500 miles on it and I bought it with 5500 miles.
So, the original owner may not have been as diligent with chain cleaning etc.
I also have no idea how he rode it...maybe I should try replacing the sprocket & chain although the chain seems free of kinks etc.
I clean it with WD40 and lube it with Bel Ray every 300 miles or so.

If you replace the sprockets the aftermarket fronts do not have the rubber on each side so the front sprocket is quiet. Like a tuning fork...vibrates. I had a 16 tooth Vortec and it sang to me. The Kawasaki Zephyr is a 16 front and has the material on each side and is quiet like the OEM 17. 16/43 is most gearing a stock length chain(116 links) will allow. Most of the 14 owners
like the EKZZZ Gold o ring chain with new steel sprockets. My rear is Driven Steel sprocket that comes in several colors. I went with the black when my stock chain only had a few miles on it. I would get a EKZZZ 120 link chain and OEM front and what ever you want final ratio to be( unless you crazy on rear). 16/43 at 70 in 6th is 4100 RPM and top speed is just over 180. Sure is Quicker doing roll on's in any gear.. :-) I did not know the newer 14's had a different front sprocket cover.... never too old to learn. Let us know if the newer cover fits.

Thanks for the chain & sprocket info Louis.
Without having seen the covers, they seem like they are the same.
The only difference is that Kawi filled in the space between the cover and the sprocket with the damper & plate.
I have no idea if it will even reduce the noise I am hearing...but I am fairly sure.

Well, looking at the parts fiche, it looks like the plate & damper bolt to the cover using bolt #92153O (which is not on the 2007 parts fiche). This would also lead me to believe that the cover for the 2009 is different as it would have a threaded hole to receive this bolt.
The other bolts that hold the cover on are the same part numbers from 2007-2009.
See below:

I have ordered the cover and if you would be willing to ship me the damper (and plate if you have it), I would be seriously grateful. Let me know what you want and of course I will cover the shipping.
