That was with Dad's Jennings Black lightning. I had a fred bear heart, but it's not with us anymore so I'm going to have to buy another one before moving to maryland.
BTW... Hogs are supposed to be hunted from the ground and you don't need a large caliber gun to kill them. All it takes is a well placed shot from a 22mag and they drop in their tracks everytime.
Chad.have you seen a 300 pound Arkansas Wild Boar with tusks running at you????? On the ground??? Face shot?????? You have more nerve than me :-)

little 12 yr old indian boys killed grizzly bears with nothing but a spear back in the day .. you whimps
Sooo! What tribe r you anyhow? We're (Chad , and me) are blackfoot , Cherokee , and Crow ! I ain't seen a Hog I can't bring down with my 22Mag , but not sure if I'd chance the old bow , unless I got some heat to back it up ! Personally , I don't think any hog or bear alive can escape my 45-70 with a320 gr hollow point lever revolution placed in its ear! I hope I get to kill me a bigger boar , and a bear soon ! I love to kill shit ! Only thing that might be more fun than dragracing !

Not sure what the load difference is between a .22 mag / .22 long / .22 short......but I'm pretty certain that you're gonna need more penetrating power than any .22 will offer.
Also don't know how heavily-skulled a hog is, but you'd need at least .30cal with little groundhogs and muskrats here in Ohio -- less than 1/3 size of a hog and these are some tough little bastards -- I've used several rounds on them with a Ruger .22 carbine, and got little ( instant ) result.........thats a fact.
You wouldn't go moose or bear hunting with an air rifle right? Hell no, need a 7.62mm or bigger because you'd have to hit the animal in the eye socket to even consider dropping it with anything smaller.
There's a true story documented about Louis & Clarks' team searching for food and It took a group of 5 hunters, 3 volleys of .50cal each to down an angry grizzly that was charging........after they field-dress the animal, it's heart and lungs were punctured, and it's face, chest, and front legs were all smashed by the lead rounds........so it was running on pure adrenalin for minutes.
That's 15 rounds of .50cal lead!! They were using muzzle-loaders of course and had to run while they reloaded between shots.........believe this was in Readers Digest back in the late 80's, but it's a true tale.........so I highly doubt a .22 would kill much anything bigger than a cat UNLESS it's automated and you empty a monster clip into the target.
I witnessed a guy get hit in the chest with 5 rounds out of a .25 auto and still ran 3 blocks before he collapsed........and we're not nearly as tough skinned as these wild critters we're shootin' at.........just my pair of pennys

shoot them directly in the ear. that's the sweet spot on a hog. you can shoot a 300 lb hog in the "kill zone" with a 7mm mag and it'll run. I've had a 70 lb spike run 100+ yds after making a perfect heart/lung shot with my .30/30 at 15 yds. At one time we also had a 6mo. old half charpei half german shepard puppy that decided he wanted to start attacking people so we had to put him down. After 4 head shots at about 5 yds range with a .45ACP and 230 gr. Hydroshock hollow points he was still trying to chew through the leash and attack us. This goes to show that you never really know what an animal is going to do.
You can always tell who doesn't know a lot about guns when they make comments about the ineffectiveness of a smaller caliber. A well placed shot from a small caliber with good velocity is more effective than a poorly placed shot with a large caliber that has shitty velocity like an old .50 caliber cap and ball musket with slow burning powder. They weren't exactly shooting a .50 bmg like I use at work. their rifles were pieces of shit back then.
Here's the ballistic info on a .22 magnum...
30 gr (1.9 g) HP 2,200 ft/s (670 m/s) 322 ft·lbf (437 J)
or a hellacious .22 caliber round... The .22-250, which will penetrate steel plate better than a .30-06.
55 gr (3.6 g) SP 3,786 ft/s (1,154 m/s) 1,751 ft·lbf (2,374 J)
There are a lot of variables that can make these small rounds not be the "ideal" round for certain types of animals... but they are just as deadly in the right hands as any other round is. The limiting factor on a small caliber weapon are wind, knock down power, wound channel size, and how well they react to hitting something in between them and their intended target. For example... you can shoot through a 3" sapling with a .45/70 and still flip the deer standing behind it... a .55 grain bullet just won't stay together (especially at those velocities.)
Now compare that to a .45 caliber muzzle loader with 150 grains of powder and a 180 grain bullet. This is a modern day muzzle loader with good powder and bullets.
Ball 180g Pyrodex pellets 150g 1553fps 959 ft/lbs
The only reason that I wouldn't want to use a small caliber for bigger game is that if you are not taking a brain shot it simply won't make a wound channel big enough to bleed the animal out since the bullet is designed for shallow penetration so that it can deliver the most shock for it's size.
That being said... My personal choice of guns is a .308. It's small enough to kill varmint with, and big enough to take out thick skinned game. It holds up well in the wind and the bullet isn't easily turned by debris. And best of all... It's easy on the shoulder.
and as for your groundhog and muskrat comment... you're fucking high if you think that they can survive a shot with a .17hmr or larger. Hell, i've got a buddy in Fallon nevada that routinely slays coyote at 150+ yds with his .17HMR.

You had to shoot a 6 month old puppy Shar Pei mix in the head 4 times with a .45 ACP "to put him down"??
I hope you know how insane that sounds. The fact that you shot a puppy 4 times in the head shows that "you never really know what an animal is going to do". Honestly, that is sick.
WTF...I mean, honestly, that is some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard...I think this topic needs to go to The Smackhouse.
