Sick of the cct rattle!
Ok, I an going to do something about it. First I would like to get my options straight.
1. Do nothing
2. CCT mod
3. Manual cct?
Can I replace it with a new oem one? If so do I need to remove the cam cover to release the tensioner like the shop manual states?

ZX-12 modded if your not into adjusting a manual. Darin has a post about a mod for the ZX-14 CCT. Makes it manual.

Modding the stock CCT is a great economical way to go but only attempt if you are good with fabbing up parts . If you got a few dollars burn get a carpenters or APE.
Or do nothing unless it was like mine that rattled forever and or rattle after hitting the rev limiter.
And yes installing a new CCT or any stock CCT requires you to remove the cam cover to release the C-clip.

I have tried three different brands of Motorcycle oil..........always a rattle for 1 or 2 seconds on cold start then all is quiet. I just changed to Amsoil 10W40 and same as Mobil 1 4T full syn.

Mine is starting to rattle longer than 3 seconds on cold startup and its forcing me to turn the bike off and then restart it. It then goes away on the second restart.

Weird, did not work on mine. Still have 1 or 2 seconds of rattle on cold start only then all is quiet.running Amsoil 10W40 motorcycle oil and OEM filter. Change both every 2500.or less. Ride it until it is out of warranty. Modded ZX-12 or??? then.

It is my assumption, you set the bike on the dyno, that brake just wrinkles that system all up on the cct shaft. No noise WOTSOEVER until you met a brake dyno > ON LIFT! So, something is either missing, collapsed, or stretched, if no clip is missing(?) or something else popped off? You drop pan looking for tiny parts?
Cause and Effect stay off the dyno! > "Thats when you get off the bike and start looking around and yelling what's up motherf@ckers?"
I've got die know dis ease is WOT chew know is know the last thing you did to make the noise happen that never was there before! Gee, D'uh, let me think!
POPISSCORN $EYE CON take it anymore... 'WOT, chew want some of dis?'

Hi from England, I realize that this is an old thread but I will chip in with my experience of the stock tensioner vs the ape manual unit vs the modded zx12 tensioner. The problem with the stock tensioner is that it can rattle and is difficult and time consuming to change. The manual tensioner cures the rattle and in my opinion is not too difficult to set. Also it is relatively cheap to buy. However I found it necessary to mess about with it to get it to fit and was not impressed with the quality. The modified zx 12 tensioner is the way to go in my experience because it can be fitted in five minutes and cures the rattle . Furthermore it is fit and forget. In addition one can periodically check how far it has extended without removing the tensioner and this gives a good idea cam chain stretch / wear if any. The down side is the cost of the zx12 tensioner plus it has to be modified by removing 125 thou or 1/8 of an inch from the mounting face . Once again a five minute job but you do need a lathe or milling machine. However after trying the ape manual I bought the 12 tensioner and modified it on my friends lathe and never looked back.........
