clutch slippage
I just bought a wrecked ZX14 with 500miles. It rode fine on the test ride, but after I got it home n took it for a ride the clutch started slipping when you give it alot of throttle. Do you think i need clutch plates , clutch kit , or could it be switch or something where it has been wrecked.

With only 500 miles i would'nt think it would need anything -
but if your gonna do anything, throw some springs in it !

You need to order a clutch kit cause the clutch is shot.
EBC or OEM will be fine.
You may only need the friction plates but if the clutch is really worn you will need the steel plates too.
But the only way to find out is to inspect your clutch plates and check the steels for any warping or glazing or any other damage.
Lay the steels on piece of glass to check the straigness of the steel plates .

Does the clutch lever have any freeplay in it?
It should have a bit of freeplay before it engages the clutch. If not there is something binding up somewhere or something is out of wack.

Yea, I figured I was going to have to take apart, just wanted to see if anyone knew something minor that could be wrong. Wishful thinking. I was surprised the clutch was bad with only 500 miles.
Also, I was thinking about buying a body kit from Yes2 Yeah, anybody familiar with them. Also need tank, n headlight assembly.

Perhaps fluid leaked out of the master cylinder or slave. I doubt the clutch is shot at 500 miles.

Ditto, 500 miles, look at rear tire. Bleed system first and check slave for cracks in castings or master from wreck.

I don't think a fluid leak or air in the line would make a clutch slip, it would make it stick. Perhaps the accident caused the clutches to get soaked with oil?

Is the clutch lever bent or something? Make sure there isn't any preload on the clutch.

You are kidding right?? The ZX-14 clutch is soaked in oil. Every clutch I install I soak in fresh clean oil before install. Look at master cylinder piston and look at clutch lever. Take
piston out of bore of clutch master cylinder on handle bar and see if Both fluid holes are open. If piston does not move a full stroke Both ways this too will make the clutch slip.
Some Itallian motorcycles have a Dry clutch but not any Kawasaki I ever installed a clutch in.
bet you were thinking a car standard trans.

Thanks for all the input. I did bleed the clutch n took it for a 30 minute test ride n it seem to work fine. I'll take it for a longer test ride this weekend to make sure, but I cant believe air in the line let it slip like that. The lever was alot harder to pull in before the bleed though. I'll post some pictures when I get bike together.
Thanks again, Mike

Air in any hydraulic system will cause all sorts of problems.
Good to hear that's all that was wrong with your system
