Considering a ZX14

I currently ride a Vrod, and I'm looking to go faster lol... Either by making the V faster (cheaper option) or getting a sport bike (more expensive, but better performance). In super-flat Illinois I dont really care about max lean angle, I'm too tall to ride the liter bikes I sat on and I dont like how the Busa looks, so that basically leaves the ZX14. I just got some newb questions.

In the used market, how well do these bikes hold their value? How much should I be looking to spend for a 3-4 year old bike, or new 08/09 from a dealer? Theres a dealer around here asking for an 09se @ $10.3k, how much hassle room is there? I also saw a Milwaukee dealer with an $8.8k leftover 08.

I'd rather buy a quality used bike with mods... make the first guy take it in the pants for riding it off the lot, but that is risky without a warranty. How durable are these bikes, is the motor/power-train bulletproof or do they have common problems at certain mileage? Anything I should look out for when buying used?

One of the main sticking points from pulling the trigger is the insurance. With full coverage it is INSANE... From the quotes I got it goes from $200 a year without collision/comprehensive to like $2000 with full coverage (quoted over $5000/yr with Geico lol). I got 1 ticket which should come off in July... should I keep shopping around? I priced it with and without a ticket its still WTFexpensive, I'm paying less than $600/yr for a sportster and vrod combined.

On a side note, these insurance companies are a scam or just stupid. $1000 deductible was quoted @ $1800 while a $100 deductable was like $3200... who would pay more in a premium than the deductible would cost?

Yes IMO insurance is expensive on the ZX14 but riding it is great. You can find a nice used one for 6-7K with aftermarket mods and you can find new ones cheap also. Though I have never ridden a V-Rod, I am pretty sure a ZX14 does everthing better and faster than a V-rod.

I had a 06 vrod and now 07 zx14. Vrod is like a 883 next to the 14. Shop insurance for better deal.

The bikes don't hold their value very well compared to a busa, however, they are bulletproof and very dependable. The clutches, motors, and transmissions still don't really have any weak points, even after been thrashed for 4 years. I'd say one thing I keep seeing the most is the CCT (cam chain tensioner). Some bikes, the CCT is loud and rattles on start-up. This isn't bad, but it just bothers some people. The good news is you can get a manual CCT for really cheap. I bought mine new and don't regret it one bit. It's fast as poopy, and very forgiving.

Thanks for the replies, I'm not looking to get rid of my V regardless, it looks way better than any sport bike IMO... Performance goes to the sport bikes hands down. I was just trying to gauge the used market for these bikes. The Vrod used market is complete garbage right now and theres alot of awesome deals, I'd assume its the same or worse for sport bikes.

Most used ZXs on craigslist I see are asking ~$7500-$8500 for 07 or 08s, seems high... Thinking I should be able to get a good one for ~$6000-6500. Has anyone sold their bike recently?

Just buy one, no matter the price. As you ride it home, you'll understand what we all know: this bike has unparalleled power, comfort and smoothness. This is one purchase you'll never second-guess.

Oh, and State Farm for insurance. Everyone else is silly money. If you get pulled over on the bike or your other vehicle(s), go to court, negotiate a (bigger) fine to eliminate the points, it's cheaper in the long run (speaking from mucho experience with tickets and traffic court).

LOL some of you guys have some crazy insurance rates. Give State Farm a call, they gave me the best rate when i was shipping around. I pay $122 every 3 months for 2 bikes full coverage to the roof! And that's a steal here in Socal where everything is expensive.

I was paying six hundred something last year and then I get the new bill from Progressive and it goes up to eight hundred something. No tickets and no claims. I have very high limits and thats probably whats killing me. My agent advised that Progressive just decided to have an increase. Called state farm and they were more for equal coverage.

I will give you the V-Rod is a sharp looking bike. The 14 is the best all around bike I have owned or ridden. Handles great at the level I ride on the street, comfortable for one or two and when I need to get some distance from a cager there is no equal. Insurance is an adventure that's for sure. +1 on the State Farm. I dropped my Foremost and had been with them for years since they wanted to jack me when I added the 14. All the other ones (Progressive, Geico, CSAA....) were so far out there it was funny. I actually asked one lady if she smoked crack when she quoted me 3200 a year!

I saw the cable show called "ultimate factories" where they showed the Vrod factory and it was remarkable technological jump forward for Harley traditional performance unfortunately many of the Hardcore Harley heads were in disappointment of the controversial water cooled Harley.

It's probably best you don't see many at the track. I'd hate to outride you on my vmax that is giving up nearly 100lbs.

well, you would have to "out ride" me cause a p-max will not out run a zx14.
