Are your shift linkages set properly?? the knuckle sticking off your engine is adjustable...you have options here and adjustments are easy to perform.

External linkages are thread adjustable (duh )and makes a difference how they are set / postioned to get the best results...works like that on just about any bike..make sure you have them set properly..don't be afraid to play with settings..won't take much to make small adjustments and may solve your problem....

Try and see...you can always set them back as you found them if it does not help out for smoother positive shifts ..should be set right from the factory but over the net no way of telling ...check them out bro..hope this helps...

I read somewhere you may not have linkages but only a direct shift lever..if so you have limited options then...my bike is a ZX010R..

I laugh my ass off with just about every post. Went up the rockstore, had a Duc and his buddy behind me and just taunted the guy with the torque from one corner to the next. Made them a dot in the mirror. I waved them on, could smell the exotic they were using. So much for posers not taking the bait.

Now at the top of the lookout, some guy says my wiring is going to get wet. Another guy mentions the wires. I said I was looking for a beemer rr like the poser I am. Go look at the front fender, I said. He and his buddy start laughing. The one guy walks away. Then I say, go look at the muffler and point. He yells to his buddy to, "come look at the muffler bearing." They got a chuckle out of it.

Cool!

Yes our bikes have direct shifters and have limited options unless we go aftermarket.

It was ok...not saying I did not like...on the 10R I just don't recall huge improvements..but it never was a big problem to start with so the improvements there were marginal from the seat of the pants.........since I dragrace it I installed just because it is available...I installed it a few over 5 years ago so working on recollection...my co2 pingel shifter does the trick for me..so best to have it along with I say...

might help the zx-14..I would try it if I was looking to improve ......has anyone here tried it on their ZX-14 ??..

That seems to be the story with the 14 is that frickin clunk from N to 1st. Other then that I like the gearbox. Goin through the gears was never an issue, actually pretty smooth, even on the Kawi factory oil no problems.

Isn't there some electronic interference on the '06s (and '07s?) in the first 3 gears? I've noticed a very slight, but annoying hesitation sometimes on my '06 on 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, and I'm pretty sure it's not my shifting skills...

Also, on the clunking N-1 shift issue - mine's not really ever been that bad, and it's a fairly early '06 model. That said, at stop lights I'm always in 1st gear with the clutch in, and when I hop on after it's parked, I put it in 1st before I start it so there can't be any clunk, lol...

I notice if I hold the clutch in a give a couple light taps on the throttle, then return to normal idle before engaging 1st that helps.

Can the weight of the oil have a huge effect of clutch drag? Right now im running 5W40 Rotella T6, which i think its slightly lighter weight then the usual 10W40.

Yes... Somewhat. Thick would be better. Why? A syrupy cling would slow down the clutch center sooner, stops the clunkiss delunkiss is kiss it a little softer on the step down. What a faster moving c-center moves like, is throwing a ball into a spinning board with holes for the ball, but separated by the gap between holes. So, you sort of hit the dog [or the ball] at the gap between the gear holes and now it clangs, like Moe giving Curly and Larry a bunch of fast slaps across the face, but really, it is the dog [almost] trying to get in the hole an bury a bone.

Just hold in the clutch for about an hour before shifting in to first, that does it for me.
Honestly, I found that the Synthetics oils make the trans shafts spin more freely and can not stop slow enough to not make the clunking noise. But when I was using regular oil, the clunking was not as bad. I also use 10-W40 all the time year round

worst shfting bike ['ve ever owned

I've always used BG products engine performance concentrate added to my oil,6 oz. bottle makes it shift smooth as silk. I'v used the stuff since the 70s on my old z1s,its worth the try.

Surely something is wrong, I dread shifting this thing. First 3 gears are the worst, clunking like the chain has a foot of slack. Very solid banging. WTF? I have the chain at the minimum adjustment. Just put in Motul oil hoping for a change. No diff. Would a Quick shifter help?

sounds like something in the transmisson is screwed up maybe some broke teath or something ..i had a friends zx12 that did that....does it ever jump out of gear? thats what his would do

A liquid lever is something you need to get used to or acquire a taste for. Last bike I owned was cable and think how many adjustments you had to make or send oil down a cable. All that crap to disassemble you want back? Now, it's a cap removal and pinch a bolt tight, you are done. I forced myself to get used to the lever, Now it's my friend.

At first I hated it. Tried to make it like my old cable style like a hair pin trigger. But it just slipped the clutch being way too accurate in the incremental positioning. Think about that and how you keep missing gear because some days it's perfect, other days >> You Suck << [cursing at it] and it is not the bike. I'm talking about myself here.

Well? No parts have changed from the other time you had zero missed shifts. WOT about those other days? You are just not accurate enough [pulling the trigger] is how I'm finding out how smooth this bike shifts. And if you keep crying, I'll buy your bike from you and I'll bet that bike shifts as smooth as mine. Runs just ass glassmooth I massage that bike is give it a once over. I'll even swap parts with you; it will still be the same bike in the snowflake of it all. You should ride mine. I think @ 5,000 rpm, you might hit the starter motor thinking it's off, not running, no shit. Running smooth goes along with the same [shift] package.

It sounds like the clutch is dragging slightly from your description. Have you put the bike on a rear stand, pulled in the clutch and put it in gear yet. If yes you have, how much was the rear wheel spinning and / or how much force/brake was required to stop it's rotation?

Is the bike difficult to get into neutral if you come to a stop in gear? That would be the perfect example of a sticky clutch.

Keep us posted & good luck.
