NO problems shifting my 06 and I used to hear the big bang from neutral to first but I changed to Rotella T-6 synthehic 5w-40 and it's been gone for over a year now. If I don't let the engine heat up(reducing the idle) then it will still clunk from neutral to first.

This is with pretty much any bike. Rotating mass (engine) engages a non moving drivetrain. The lower the RPM's on idle the less pronounced the clunk.

This guy nailed it -- I've been told this very thing since my teens and dirtbikes. IME Alot of guys experience less N-1 clunk with synthetic engine oils as it's not as viscous when cold -- a little clutch drag when the trans is engaged is usually the case, but less pronounced with syn oil......again, IME. Running Mobil1 and still always let mine come back to idle before I stomp it in and go anyway, seems to be the key with me to be clunk free -- almost a song there....

Thank god its normal, i was wondering why going from N to 1st created such a loud clash into gear. I mean its like the loudest shift from N to 1st i ever dealt with like if i were trying to shift into gear without using the clutch. My last 3 bikes were no where like this, its usually nothing more then a soft clack into gear.

The larger the engine the bigger the gears are.....and the louder the noise.

We pay the cost for all the abuse the 14 trans will take at the track.

it must be a kawi trait then because my friends busa shifts into to gear with a light clack like my Gixxer 750.

Big bang from N to 1st here too...
But I have to say that since I have changed out the fluid for a higher quality one and switched to a braided stainless steel line it isn't nearly as bad. Probably the zero expansion in the line when depressing the clutch allowing more fluid to get to the clutch without having to exapnd the line too... But then again it could be my imagination...

You may be right, last bike was a ZX9R. Friends 2006 14 has 30,000 hard miles no
trans issues, just the N to 1 clunk.

My 07 ZX14 had the notorious clunk when I first got the bike. After the 1K mile break in I changed to full synthetic oil and it shifts smooth as butter!

The zx14 has a slight back cut on the gears from the factory, This creates a trans that doesn't shift quite a smooth as a straight cut, but the enguagement is much more positive and allows our bikes to handle much more power and abuse (POWERSHIFTS) than the busa trans that is notorius for rounding off 2nd gear.

Mine got much smother with 0-40 weight oil, and about 2000 miles.

n to first is always a loud clunk thats just from clutch drag.Start it in gear if you want but that clunk you here dosent hurt anything.

Dis is a field fix needing some attention. I'm going to say, 60/40 human error. The thing is, I really can't knock the transmission. And I am not talking about the clunk in 1st, when you can let the one shaft slow down, drops right in, you hear not a whisper; if you wait before you stab. The longer you wait, the quieter the stab. I have a different problem where I avoid the clunk altogether as someone already mentioned.

Umm like I said adjust the clutch lever where you do Not have to pull in the clutch so

far to disengage. Makes for a faster power shift with throttle pined as I blow by Hub :-)

Also re read my post about lazy shiifting from 1 to 2. Funny video, you crack me up Hub.

Actually on my zx14 I can sit there and pull in the clutch for 30 seconds and it doesn't make a difference, if I pop it into 1st from neutral it still does that loud clash.

im in the process of changing clutch fluid. I suffer from said clunky 1st condition as well. 2nd shift isnt too bad, kinda rough. Even with fresh oil change (long drip out period, too!) it does it. 35000 mils strong, no probs!

Like I said, birds of a feather flocking bike has 12K miles on it. Tar and feather it as much as I can and ass hard as I can; ball busting the Japanese about their bike. I may have missed a shift that bad about 3 or 4 times? I'd say this is a pretty damn good gearbox I can't even count the mis-shifts on one hand [job].

I'm reading a few posts of guys with the Busa's blowing out gear. Ask, "The Hand" how many gearboxes he had to rebuild from both Gen's. Cackle, cackle, cackle. Sticks together does the trans. Body is gooood.... (brain is not)

idle speed effects this as well
The output shaft id parked, and the input is spinning relative to RPM.

as far as the n-1st clunk goes i've found that putting a little pressure on the throttle against the stop lowers the rpm just a little and and she goes into first with no clunk. i've been doing it so long it's become habit and two riding buddies with 14s have had the same result. other than that this is the best shifting bike i've ever owned

I laugh my ass off with just about every post. Went up the rockstore, had a Duc and his buddy behind me and just taunted the guy with the torque from one corner to the next. Made them a dot in the mirror. I waved them on, could smell the exotic they were using. So much for posers not taking the bait.

Now at the top of the lookout, some guy says my wiring is going to get wet. Another guy mentions the wires. I said I was looking for a beemer rr like the poser I am. Go look at the front fender, I said. He and his buddy start laughing. The one guy walks away. Then I say, go look at the muffler and point. He yells to his buddy to, "come look at the muffler bearing." They got a chuckle out of it.
