Came to my Senses

Very recently I was thinking about selling the ZX-14 and buying a Gen 1 Hayabusa to do a 1397 + cams project. I put a feeler out for my bike in the classifieds section and the money guys told me I could get for the bike actually were right in line with what I thought and would have set me up nicely to purchase a 2002 - 2005 Hayabusa.

But the one thing I couldn't stomach was the fact that I would be giving up my ZX-14 for a bike that everybody and his brother rides. When we post-up at Rainbow Beach, Washington Park, the Amoco Station Downtown, Streets of Woodfield or any other "spot" in the Chicagoland area there are at least 5 Hayabusas present (at each spot). On the other hand, I might only see a total of 5 other ZX-14s the entire night we're out. They're that scarce!

I've decided to trust the skilled hands of Eric at Rev'd Up Motorsports for another winter project to begin in November. I'm going to have him throw in 13.5:1 pistons, big cams, thinner gasket, balanced crank (remove counter balances), Muzzy SS system, BMC Race filter and tune the thing out. I'm looking for 190 rwhp and I'm pretty sure I can get it. Eric just returned my 1000 to me with 190.46 rwhp (1070 job).

nice!

1397's are hard to beat though. They are very reliable and fast.

if you're going to go with 13.5:1 pistons, I wouldn't do the thin head gasket as well. You'll most likely run into the problem of not being able to ride on the street due to the gas that you'll have to run (unless you can get e-85).

Got Psychobike up on another tab and guys are talking about a stoker motor like it's the greatest thing since Debbie Does Dallas. I'm not a drag racer - I'm a street rider. Does a stroked motor make sense for me? Would I need bigger cams, head work or anything else or could I simply drop a stroked crank in the bike and go? Thanks.

if you're a street rider then big cams don't make sense either. My choice of a build if I could afford it would be a moderate compression 2x4 (1510) with one of jims heads and some moderate cams. I think that it would still be pretty reliable and would be a fucking screamer.

He sure is! He's the type of guy who will tell you everything you need to know and leave it up to you to decide what you want to do. Great tuner. Took my buddy's 08 Busa from 177 rwhp to 187 rwhp right in front of our eyes on the dyno Saturday night! Boy gotz skillz!!

I've been kicking around the idea to throw in a CNC Competition head with the rest of my set up. Jim seems to really know what the heck he's doing with that 14 head and I'm sure that once everything is bolted together Eric will be able to tune the crap out of the bike.

If I do the CNC head I won't have the crank balanced - I'll just leave the crank stock and keep the counter balancers in there. With the time frame I'm playing with I won't be able to come up with enough money to do both the head and the crank balancing.

Decisions, decisions. What would you guys do? Thanks to all.

Really shocked you thought about selling a 14 to buy a gen 1 busa to make a 1397 that will barely run faster then a stock motor 14. now if you where talking gen2 that would be different. A gen 2 busa or 14 with a dry kit will out run most not all but most 1397's I've seen.

Very Very happy dyno or you have other work your not telling.!!!!!!!

With a little head work and bump in compression, 190hp is easily reached and still fully streetable.

Now see, that's the other thing. I ran this whole crazy idea by Eric and he flat-out told me that I could make the power I'm looking for with a 1398 Busa for quite a bit less money. He also told me that one of the tricks that the Gen 1 guys are doing is dropping the Gen 2 crank right into the Gen 1 and it's a fabulous mod!

Busas are like Chevys, there are parts everywhere which drives costs lower.

I know exactly where you're coming from. There are a couple of really nice Busa turbo's for sale in our shop and I was tempted, the 350bhp one or the 500?

Then I thought "everyone and his dog's been there and done that". There are very few 14's in my club, it's 90% Hayabusas and my Kawasaki is about the quickest in it's class over the quarter and competitive over the mile so why change.

1397s seem to mph REALLY high. I'm not saying they are faster then a 14 on gas, but they sure as heck aren't slow! I would love a 1397 1st gen

I believe it. I'm just saying that if the zx14 wasn't available, I would get a 1st gen 1397 before a 2nd gen.

157 is decent, but I wouldn't be jumping for joy after adding 97cc and coming up with those #'s.

There might be more to that story too.... we have no idea what the weather was, rider weight, etc. It isn't a slouch.

Personally I would get the Gen2, and take it to 1441. You don't have to split the cases or anything. Just use a Gen1 cylinder, the Gen 2's are prone to splitting, it seems.
