I always ship as per customers request. But when I have the option to choose I choose USPS cause they're fast and cheap.
When a package is a little to big or heavy then I use UPS cause USPS charges way too much for oversized packages.
I always get insurance too just in case.

I ship with UPS and USPS daily, thousands of packages a month at my work. First and foremost, UPS is almost always rough on the packages so make sure its packed well. UPS rarely ever loses packages, their tracking is pretty active and works well. UPS charges brokerage charges to international destinations.

USPS at best is mediocre, out of say 1,000 packages they will lose about 40 of them. Its pretty frustrating and their tracking service is next to turd. It doesn't even update sometimes and it will sit un updated for weeks until they just say opps we lost it. Worst of all, they never return the packages if it cannot be delivered, instead they just throw it in the auction pile.

FedEx, ive had good luck with, the driver that comes here is a asshole but the package's always gets delivered and damage claims are less then 0.1%. We use this for expensive items, and international destinations as they don't charge broker fees.

Kinda long reply...

I have been in distribution for 25 years from a mega billion dollar company Ingram Micro where back when I worked for then we processed 1500+ orders day prolly to what we do today now with my current employer (15 years)

We pay more people than anyone in the world and ship more than just paychecks alot more! you might see the watermark letter that begins with A and ends with P strict rules and the IT nazi's forbid posting the name on message boards.

Based on work experience:

UPS has been the most consistent over the years, least expensive, better tracking with and longer tracking history vs the rest. Would not beleive how many traces I do for something that was sent months past and now just be implemented and the client say "we never received it" but they paid for it in full months ago! UPS you can go back online 12 months versus the rest with thier mixed bag of tracking history requires a phonme call to CS and wait time of 24-72 hours for faxed proof of delivery and oh that client is demanding proof of delivery or we will need to send replacements overnight on our dollar...

UPS pays the drivers one if not the highest wages for drivers. So in most cases your driver has a long tenure, and you are not going through new ones that miss the pickup and delivery times because they are the "new" driver.

Fed-EX (air) Good servcie at a higher cost but not better than UPS. Fed-EX claim to fame was they forced UPS old image where drivers were arrogant, if you were not ready when they showed up too bad to a true client focused service. They cemented with customers overnight air means Fed-EX it! but truth be told DHL was the leader long before...

USPS You gotta be fucking kidding .

Airborne/DHL: DHL still in businenss for International air shipments destinations outside U.S. The kicker on International deliveries exception being most areas of Canada but try Mexico or the Carribbean UPS/FED-EX use a 3rd party courier to deliver which some do not have the same delievry standards and result in longer delievery times.

Airboen: When it existed sucked consistently. The main problem being they paid really crappy wages and required drivers to work split shifts this resulted in high turnover with poory motivated drivers. They had a spinoff called Unishippers that offered great pricing for the small business that UPS/FED-EX would not offer deep discounts like they do for large companies but again revolving door of drivers meant missed pickups and deliveries were common.

Fed-EX ground: Old RPS, drivers lease trucks and are paid on a per package pickup/delivery. Longer distances or zones are usually a day faster than UPS ground and competive pricing. Finally intergrated Fed-EX air with Fed-Ex for customer service/tracking .
Less trucks, drivers in most cases equate to later delivery times overall.

UPS Worldship software is far superior to Fed-EX/DHL offerings.

So yes agree it sucks for the receiver as well as the shipepr when a a package is lost or mis sorted but it happens rarely in the with the billions of pacakages processed.

One thing they all have in common based on several sort visits both at UPS hubs for ground and the airport air hubs while improving they still toss your shit.

I remember with Ingram Micro and the first invite we had for Fed-EX sort.

One laptop we shipped a lot of was made by AST and stood out with thier packaing back than (1990's) were 6k plus were a whopping 33 mhz with 2 megs of ram with 5 1/4 floppy disk drives! anyway watched them being tossed (very short window to unload from package trucks to the special plane containers they were being tossed and a few dropped

Me to my Fed-Ex rep that is only 6k and see why we have had so many shattered LCD display claims....

But the one thing I came impressed with Fed-Ex and I have used the same thought process in past jobs since were the "WHAT IF" signed that were posted in every single department. Basically kept all on their toes with backup plans to back up plans if anything in the ssytem broke or a delay even down to if a crew got sick they had a plane(s) and crews on stand by. Now that thinking I was most impressed with.

Use whoever you want and sorry to hear of your service issues but have not convinced me UPS sucks ass..

well written Rick, I only ship a few things a year. So I can only go by what I hear from UPS AFTER they drop the ball. Which has been 1 phone call after a complaint filed. It's been nearly a month since I shipped the package. I felt a refund is in order. They said absolutely. I haven't recieved ANY follow-up. This package must have 15 labels on it by now. estimating arrival by following the tracking puts the arrival still a week out. There's never been an arrival date posted on their website either. If I ship 3 items a year and 1 gets lost, then 33% of my products shipped might not get there. I agree they ship millions of packages and to have a few get misplaced is pretty good odds. It's in the hands of customer service between shipper and receiver now and I've heard very little.

This is an absolute joke UPS has perpetrated with this shipment. Where do I get to select the one month shipping option when using UPS? They've managed to route my shipment back to Seattle Washington. This is the fourth trip across the country fr this shipment. I wish I could get credit of the Air Miles for this shipment...
