Be Careful out There
Hi All,
As most know I ride my bike whenever possible however today my daughter had a math Contest at a High School in West Orlando so it was the Car I had to drive. It takes about 4 hours for them to complete their exams so I figured I'd take a ride out to Winter Garden to check out a couple bike shops. I jumped on the E-W Expressway to Turnpike where I was passed by 6 or 7 bikers followed by a chase truck. Seems one of the bikers wheel caught the grooves of the removed lines and graced the guard rail tossing Biker 1 into the middle of the road and the biker 2 hit him and he lost his bike then a third biker lost his bike and took out a large lamp post tossing it into the middle of the road. I must give a lot of credit to my follow car drivers everyone avoided the bikers and came to a controlled stop.
I went to aid one of the bikers who was in the road to assure him he was no longer in danger (of on coming cars) but the medic told us to leave them on their backs until help could get there. I did my best to assure him that he could not do much to avoid the other biker and both were in very good moods considering what they had just been through. The third biker was near the pole and seemed to be fine, he was walking around.
I helped 2 other people get the pole out of the middle of the road we needed to get traffic moving so the Medic could get to the guys(they were caught in traffic) then went back to the guys to make sure they were doing OK and thankfully they were. Once the medical people got there and police seemed to have everything under control I felt I might be in the way. I went back to both guys to tell them I was leaving and they are in good hands. I assured the guys that I would be with them until help got there (guess it's the years of being a at home dad showing through). I drove a mile or so ahead and the other 3 bikers were on the side of the road, I figured I'd better give them the news of their friends. Then proceeded to the bike shop. I was not in much of a mood to look around, so I went back to school and waited for my daughter. In the end I think both guys will ride again if they choose to, but I know the next couple months are going to be rough.
Strange, this is the first time I was able to assist fellow bikers where I was not the point of interest for the medical people. You know it felt great, everyone at the scene worked great together and I feel pretty good about our fellow Americans. You know I think God sends us a little reminder every once in a while that it can happen to you so please Be careful out there.

+1 on the be careful out there!
You never know what or when it's coming so you need to be ready for any situation at all times when you're on the bike.
In a cage it's different, you can relax put the cruise control on,
talk on that cell phone or text on it . But on a bike all your attention needs to be directed on your surrounding and you must be able to have full control of your machine at all times.
That's why sometimes if you get that feeling some days where you just don't feel like riding then don't. Some of us have to ride anyway caus that motorcycle is our sole transportation.
You must be extra special careful and ride below your normal level in that case.
It's a jungle out there!

Thanks for sharing.
I have out grown the long top speed street stuff.
I think 16/48 gearing can save lives as it forces me to run no more than about 65mph on long rides.
You did what Americans do,
Thank You.

Boy I'd hate to think what would happen to me if I were only doing 65 mph here on any socal freeway where everyone is doing at least 85mph

Great story! It's amazing to see how many people drive around a wreck that they see happen just because they don't wantto be held up. If I were one of those people I would be ashamed of myself to tell anyone I even saw the crash.
Good for you! I bet those guys will neer forget you!

Thanks for the comments all,
After actually seeing part of the accident my psy-e begins to play mind games. I scheduled a ride this morning with a co-worker and feared the worse. It was without a doubt the best ride of the year, near 70 degrees and sunny man I could not have planned better weather.
As for the guys never forgetting me, I suspect your right. On Feb 14 1973 my house nearly burned to the ground. There was a guy who helped us and to this day we did not know who he was but we never forgot him.

Great post, thanks for sharing.
I rode over 600 miles around FL this weekend with a few other C14 riders. No incedents / drama / no tickets fortunately.

On a lighter note (and I need it)
Steve,
I may have to soon turn my crown over to you my friend, 600 miles is pretty kick ass, today was as perfect as it gets in Florida.

toohype thanks, I appreciate your kind words.
zx-14lvr, when I rode a cruiser at bikeweek it did pull me in and out of the deep cracks. Guess there are times where you have to be more on your game in a cruiser than on a Sportbike.
