This is why you don't run a clip style master link...

even though I had blue RTV on it, maintain my chains immaculately, and check it before every ride My bike decided yesterday on the freeway that it wanted to shit the master link and on it's way to being lost forever the chain beat the piss out of everything that it could find lol. Luckily the chain guard did it's job and saved my leg and from what I can tell the cases... but the tiger tail is bent, The left side rear blinker pod/ blinker assembly are toast, the chain guard is toast, and I have to buy a new chain since the other one was no where to be found. Sorry that the pics aren't very good quality. They were taken on the side of the freeway while I was waiting on Dakota9498 to come pick me up so that we could have the grand experience of putting a long low bike into the back of a dodge 4x4 lol.

As for all of you who said not run a clip type... I know i know... you told me so.

A clip type link is not a great choice for the street. That being said, many of the fastest, quickest, and most powerful race bikes in the world use a clip link.

While we're on the subject, I also strongly advise against a non o-ring chain for the street.

Though they take more maintenance, they are no more likely to fail than an o-ring or X-ring are. Please explain why they aren't good for the street.

Because they take 10x the maintenance. They are not sealed and any grit/sand/moisture/etc gets right to the pins. They will wear out rapidly on the street, and you really should clean and lube them at least 5x as much as an o-ring. Because they are so sensitive to lubrication, on a longer ride they can get very hot and the chain will swell and tighten. This will increase the wear exponentially.

Last year I removed the DRZ-2 non o-ring chain from Racheal's turbo bike. That chain was also lubed and clean religiously. The pins were very worn, and it had low miles on it.

They are simply not designed for street operation.

I just got a new chain and decided not to use the clip style that came with it for that reason and I actually just ordered it yesterday and now I'm glad I did! I just didn't feel safe with just a clip holding my chain together. Glad to see you didn't get hurt!!!

That tail piece is pretty cheap as well. I think the OE one was like $120 for mine. I also run the clip type links.

Personally I have had good luck with masterclips, but I always make sure they are installed with the open end opposite rotation direction

Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones as well, been using clip links on just about every one of my bikes that I have had, beat the living piss out of them and they never gave me one problem at all...glad you're ok and have all your limbs though

If you can't find the chain, it is difficult to say that it is definitely the master clip that is to blame.

I would bet, 100%, that it was the clip link. That is a DRZ-2 chain that he was running....one of the strongest made.

I also spit a clip at Maxton, but the chain didn't come apart. The clip links are sensitive to installation tehnique and procedure, and need constant monitoring if you want to play it safe.

Have had good luck with epoxy over the clip, got to get the oil off the link plate first, time cosuming, and out of 15 to 18 chain's in life , only had two close call's with , the clip , thinking they might be ok for people looking over their chain after every ride.
after those photo's rivet type for long ride's for me !
big hassel grinding off rivet link's for gear change's
they sell bolt on type, littel nut's tighten the link plate on , they work very well, but stick out where the nuts are , is a clearence issue on some bike's

Bawls glad to hear it didn't take your leg off! Like stated above, it's only one piece of plastic and a chain guard. Could hav been really bad...

Be curious to the install technique. It has EVERYTHING to do with the longevity. I've seen riveted links fail due to improper installation.

Last time I used a clip link was on a Honda 350, it didn't work for shit on that. I can't imagine using one on anything with real power. If a staked link is done right it is as strong as the rest of the chain, that will never be true with a clipped link. You're lucky that it didn't bite you Bawls! Plastic is cheap compared to a hospital stay. Stake that bitch on next time.
