EK ZZZ has a couple shims that prevent over compression of the plates while rivetting. Great idea.

on my 636 the dealer (local) joke put a mx 520 master link on my bike charged me full price on a good link and 500 miles later a hole shot riped the pin right out clip was still on. but took out tail and few things. i hung up in the sproket too. I will never put a clip link on or ever have any one eles put my chain on. i do all my own work now and buy the best .

alot on the line

I have used black & the gray silcone in the local auto parts store but saw that it would peel off in time...I found out about the toyota liquid gasket from a Pro ET wheelie bar bike guy that works at a toyota dealer after complaining to him about the silicone peeling off...

Buy toyota liquid gasket for the oil pan at the dealer parts counter...

Clean the link and clip with brake kleen then put the liquid gasket on...I have it on my drz drag chain link clip for 3 years now and it hasnt come off yet !!!

To get it off you need to use a wire brush...

this biz of clip vs rivet makes me chuckle, been there, done that.

You need a qual chain tool to install the plate on a clip style & (as pointed out above), you should replace the master link every time you break the chain so why in the world run a clip style???

A master link costs less than 10 bux.

It takes 10min max more time to rivet the link than use a clip, and with spacer plates, there is no guessing or measuring.
Tighten down on it till it stops, pull the plates, and job is done to spec.

Am I missing something?

I've ran clipped master links for years without trouble but I never thought of that. Great Idea!!!

I`ve run as many as 2 master links on my 7.second 180mph dragbikes and never had the clips come off or broke the chains....I did use the Toyota oil pan gasket sealer on them too....

ive had my clip fall off on me while i was riding. it happend on my 07 6r. i had put on the green kawasaki racing chain. nice chain. anyways. i took a trip of about 360 miles on way. spent the weekend there then headed back home. i really dont know when my clip broke or came off. i pulled into my drive way and did a walk around. behold my clip was gone but the link plate was still on. guess the grime and tightness held it on. luckily nothing happened. but thinking, imagine how long it was missing and doing minimum of 95. gives me chills. not to mention my exhaust hangar broke as well. so never will i use clip master links. in the process of buying chain tool.

Same here. I have lost the clip off my clip link on 3 different occasions & 2 bikes. Twice on the 07 zx14. I was lucky and caught it each time on a chain inspection. Never lost the side plate so I really feel I lucked out. All were new RK brand links/chains. Rivet links only from now on and done with RK chains as well.
