How good of a bike is a zx11?
My good friend is thinking about buying a pristine 1996 zx11. Anyone own one of these? How are they for sport touring?
This one comes with a corbin seat and higher windshield. How is the power compared to the 14?
How bad is it to work on the carbs to synch and whatnot?
Thanks,
Abe

Buy a zx14 instead.
On the note of the zx11, I'm not familiar with them

I had a 96 ZX11. It was pretty damn reliable. I ran the heck out of, but never on the track. It makes an awesome sport tourer. It will eat miles of road and give back good gas mileage doing it. Its a long heavy bike, so if you start pushing it hard in the corners or work the brakes hard, then it will show its weight.. I didn't have a 1 thing to complain about it..

Had a '98.. heavier, and slower then the 12 or 14 and loud with a D&D pipe, but still a fun bike.

I never own one but my best friend had a 05 zx-11 and I rode it a few times its a comfortable bike.He rode the bike for 5yrs with no problem just regular tune-ups. The zx-11 was the KING for along time but doesn't have the power of todays bikes.

I know that if you ride a 1+ mile wheelie on them the #3 rod will go lol. MY buddy joe found that one out the hard way. Now he has a bigbore stroker to put in it when we gets the time to do the work.

I still have my '94 ZX-11 along wit the ZX-14. I still ride it and like it, however, 14 is a much better bike. Nice pristine 11 are still worth quite a bit, but nice 14 can be had for not much more. Tell him to get a 14.

I had one before i got my 14 and it after getting off the 14 and back on to it it felt heavy. Great bike though! Mine had a ZZR1200 engine in it anlong with alot of other mods.

If I hadnt fallen in love with the 14 I would probably still have it.

I had a 1994D model. It was a dammm good bike, ahead of its time.!! For reg (not dead stop) roll on racing. We ran them for years,Just a carb kit, pipe,& +2 on the rear & this held everything down..Only problem was when you beat on them extremely hard from a dead stop, or wheelies, They would loose #3 rod bearing due to oil starvation ,in Which Terry K. came out with a oil pan by pass assembly to fix this issue.

I owned a black 94 and the candy wine 96 ZX-11. The 11 was the King of all bikes all throught the 90's. I kept my 96 till 2008. Bought the ZX-14 in 2006. The 11 was a great sport tourer. I had a lot of fun on it. Pulled a lot of girls with it. They loved the Candy Wine color. Won a lot of bike shows with it. Everybody always thought it was a custom paint job. One of the best looking paint jobs ever IMO. I wish Kaw would come out with that same color for the 14.
As far as performance, the 14 will shut it down quick compared to the 11. No comparison. Even with the 1109 kit in my 11, it still wouldn't hold a candle to the 14. The 11's 40 pounds heavier with about 40 to 50 less HP. Once I purchased the 14 I forgot all about the 11. I never thought this would happen but the 14 was sooo much better, technology wise, performance wise, upgrades, etc. I ended up selling my 11 about a year and 1/2 later because I just wasn't riding it no more. Unless u just gotta have a 11, I would definitely go with the 14, hands down.

I had a buddy that turbo'd his '94-D -- He couldn't keep it from ripping the rear loose doing 80 mph roll ons at 12psi!! If he'd changed out the swing arm, dropped it a few inches, and shoved a 240 under it that bitch woulda' been hookin' good and holding down 8's all day! He ended up selling it since he couldn't keep her tame enough to street ride and just couldn't handle it -- he never should have done it for an everyday ride -- if I remember correctly, it was putting over 250hp to the dyno wheel with 10-12 lb boost with capability of up to 30lbs i believe.......flippin' nuts!!

I hate to tell you buddy, but a 240 won't hook. Bigger tire doesn't mean better traction. It's all about rubber compound. That 11 sounds bitchin though .

I see, I just cant believe Kaw stuck such a small tire under that bike -- I mean even 600's have been coming out of the factory with 180 rears for years and years now.......but I'm learning more and more about the drag scene since owning my 14 -- and yes, his old 1100 was a badass machine that would get up and go in a butt-fierce hurry!!

I have had two of them over the years. They are fantastic bikes, but you can't compare them to the 14. If this is something to get him riding this spring vs sitting home I say buy it and ride the wheels off of it. If he is new to racing, the clutch is great and the motor is tough as nail especially after 97. Make sure to have plenty of kill time if you air shift the bike they were known for bending shift forks on the early models. If he is not going to race he could ride it forever and not have to do much. My Brandywine zx-11 is still one of the best bike I have ever owned!

I can guarantee you that the pirelli diablo 240 won't hook well enough to run a decent time at the track. You might get a low 1.7 high 1.6 out of it, but the only thing that's good enough for is an asswhipping.

Great bikes, had several off them. the worst for getting the #3 rod bearing. I had a Mr Turbo kit on my last one. it was the FI kit with the little gold box that you had to adjust for different weather conditions. If you put the oil pan with the fix on it it will live a long time. When I first got mine it had a left side exit Muzzy on it. I went from a 1992 GSXR11000 to the 1993 ZX11D. A great bike and you can still put the C model ZX11 6 speed transmissions in the ZRX11's for a better ride.

It was a good bike back in the day............in fact I think the current ZX 14 was somewhat based off the ZX11..........but unless you can steal one for next to nothing I would go with a ZX 14, WAYYYYY more power, better handling and you can pick used ones up for REALLY good prices right now.

Ok, I understand that it's all about tire compound ( ALL 'land' racing rely's on tires in one way or another ) but I'd dare to bet an identically compounded 240 vs. 160 tire will definitely show improvement on launch traction -- bigger footprint meaning more friction surface meaning more traction right? I mean why else would they use those monster wrinkle-wall drag slicks on top fuel cars if they could save cash running on 10-speed bike tires? I'm only thinking logically, in theory this should apply -- but I don't really drag race and haven't researched any of this. Just trying to think outside the bun.
