Used Chain

I'd like to hear everybody's take on purchasing a used stock chain with low mileage.

Is it possible to see it before you buy it?
if not ask what the measurements of 20 links is.
The service limit is 323 mm (12.7")
Standard is 317.5 to 318.2 mm (12.50 - 12.53 ")
And verify that all the o-rings are intact and not damaged in anyway, and thatno rust exists anywhere.
If those tests are good then I'd buy it but not for too much.
Then when I got it in my possesion I'd check the measurements myself and inspect the chain with a fine tooth comb.

Also look for any" bad links" links that are stiff or prematurely worn out. Usually rust will be a sign but not always.

INTIMIDA2OR, Thanks for the great tips! It was an ebay deal, but I was a little skeptic. Still might just buy new.

Right on . A used chain can be a good buy but you need to know how to correctly inspect it.
It would be best to see it in person, but in this case you can't. So if it's priced low enough
It's worth checking out .But inspect it carefully yourself if you get it.

A used chain isn't a bad thing. Take for example the chain on your bike right this second. It's used correct? You saying you don't want to use it?

Now if the guy installed the chain and went around the block with it and took it off, that would be a good deal too.
Or if the chain had like 50 miles or something stupid low like that would be good too.
Still there's no way to know for sure , but the only way is to tell how much wear there is in a chain is to measure the links like I said and inspect it closely.
Buyer beware even with new chains on Ebay . I've run into a few chains that were supposed to be " brand new in the box"
but were not! They were cleaned and re-greased and used new packaging
I checked them out and they were stretched and worn beyond the service limits.
Luckily I inspect all the stuff I buy before I install them on my bikes especially when buying from ebay.

Yes save on insurance but don't skimp on coverage
The state minimums will keep you in debt forever if you damage anything or hurt anyone.
Geez and with state minumums here in cali are like 12K property ,and 15K bodily injury.
Any accident can potentially exceed those minimums big time!

I hope he does buy from a reputable seller. But if he doesn't , at least he's armed with some information.

Well, I figured that I'd give it a try. It was only 55 bucks. So I went on and bid on it and got a surprise at the end of the auction. I didn't check the auction after getting a reminder and ended up getting beat out by a 56 dollar offer at the last minute.

Go figure, LOL. . .
