Brocks exhaust install questions
I tried installing my alienhead exhaust today and it had a leak. So I am going to get some more exhaust gaskets and try again.
What side should be facing outwards (towards the pipe) on the copper gaskets? The flat or rounded side?
Are the exhaust flanges pretty sturdy? I tightened them pretty tight trying to seal the leak. It wasn't butt puckering tight but pretty snug? I want to know if they bend real easily?
Also when putting the springs on the collector and the muffler the whole pipe moved slightly? Is that normal and would that of hurt it?
What's the best way of getting the springs loose at the header?
Is this something I should take it to the dealership for? And what would that run me?
If you've read any of my previous posts you know what a noob I am when working on bikes. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

well that depends on if the leak goes away once it warms up. does it continue to leak afterwards?? if so then you may wanna replace the gaskets (like i believe shane ended up having to do so) you can also use some gasket sealer on the primaries and where the muffler slips on.
there is a "special" tool for getting the springs off, you can probably pick one up online for about 10 bux...but if you got the grip..you can just use needle nose.
oh and i would assume the flat part of the gasket should go against the head since that should be flat and true.
just double check how tight the nuts are and you should be good to go.

It's from the exhaust flanges that bolt to the head I'm pretty sure. Got any suggestions? How tight can I tighten them? The first time I installed it I thought I tightened it pretty good but two of the copper gaskets didn't even look compressed.

Use new gaskets. Put a dab of grease on them to hold them up in the head. I put the seam in the copper gasket facing the head. That way the pipe doesn't grab the seam and spread the gasket.
Tighten the spigots down evenly. Do not fully tighten one side and then attempt the other.
If you tighten them too tight you will bend the flanges and ruin the gaskets. Tighten snug. If there is a leak, locate it. Then snug those bolts about 1/2-3/4 turn at a time until the leak goes away. Despite what the instrucitons may suggest, they will seal without any rtv.

I've only installed a few exhaust, but been lucky. Never had to deal with this problem.
