How many of you drag racers footshift??
as title states, ill be getting a catalyst seat soon for this upcoming season and i MAY hold off on the air shifter setup just to see how well i can run without the airshifter. bad idea?

The Catalyst seat will make it a little harder to make the 1-2 shift.
There are a lot of reasons to run an airshifter; quick and reliable shifting is only one of them (or is that two of them?).

Both my boys love foot shifting and running stock arms. They know they can run faster with an airshifter and long wheelbase but according to them it takes the fun out of it.
With just bolt-ons on their 14's they both run low 5.90's in the 1/8th, we're hoping to make it to a decent quarter mile track to see what they run. I'm thinking around nine teens, time will tell.

Depending on how tall and flexible you are you could have a little trouble getting that 1-2 shift. My air shifter didn't help much on my et but made it a lot more consistant.

I foot shift and I agree about the 1st to 2nd change being the most difficult. I have been considering a 1 up, 5 down race shift set-up with rearsets. If I use a shifter I will have to change classes.
It will also make with the 5th to 6th change at LSR events easier. This is usually at 170mph or above and it's sometimes hard to get the toe of your left foot up onto the foot rest and out of the wind blast at these speeds, as well as the drag this causes being inefficient and losing you speed.

I think I see everyones points. I already kno will end up getting one. But just to challege myself and make myself a better racer. I'm not that flexible the last I recall.
I did run the reverse pattern on my zx10 with the stock rearsets.

We hardly ever run heads up, so being the fastest dosent amount to a whole lot here. Just bracket racing is all I can compete in..

Yes , I foot shift with my catalyst seat , and the faster you make your bike , the harder it is to foot-shift especially from 1to 2nd gear! I never missed a sngle shift till I geared down , and then the misshifts got more frequent ! I'm thinking an air-shift would help all around !

Once the 60fts. get in the low 1.50's it is real hard to not miss a shift.

I don't have a catalyst, but the only shift that i ever have a problem getting is 2-3 if i have to hot lap and my bike starts heating up. That's with 16/46 gearing.

I bought a catalyst, but never even attempted to use it. I already look like a gorilla on a tricycle as it is. I was fooling myself to think I could make the 1-2 shift with that catalyst seat. Oh wells.... I always thought air shifting takes some of the sport out of drag racing, but I can see their appeal. I'll probably get one half way through this next drag race season.

I bought a Jones House of Power fiberglass seat for my 12 and it was the best dollar for dollar investment I made on my bike,I footshift and found the seat keeping my fat ass in place was the ticket for no more missing the 1 to 2 upshift. I was taught that it was always good to master the art of foot shifting in the event of a problem with an air/electric shifter you could still race and put a good # down. I hvae gone 9.70's on my stock wb 12 Crotch Rocket has gone 9.11 on his 12 foot shifting so I would say go ahead and do it

pass everything but the gas station lol. I average 25ish mpg lol. I'm one of those people that could ride anything and be happy with it so after the first couple of trips i got used to the steep gearing on the street. I only have a 25mile each way commute every day and the track is only like 35 miles away so it doesn't bother me too much. Traction is hard to come by on the street though. Even with the u-soft.

I still foot shift...
Its a challenge to me to be in a fairly aggressive launch possition and get a 1.48 60ft. while getting my left foot up for the 1-2 shift...I bracket race so foot shifting is ok...
If your heads up racing then you'll want a air shifter so you can get that better 60 foot from the real aggressive launch...
