Improving shift quality

1-3 are really clunky. 4-6 seem ok. I am going to try to reposition my rear sprocket because the tight versus loose spot is alot. Then I can run a tighter overall chain. Anyone try this? How about a Shift Star upgrade? Bled clutch w/ bike leaned over. This is really a sore spot for me as I have a Suzuki that is a joy to shift. Any suggestions?

I went from a crisp gixxer's shifts to the zx14's shifts. I had the same complaint. I found that after a few thousand miles, and using a top quality full syn oil, the shifting improved. I wouldnt think tiping your bike over to bleed the clutch would help unless the system has been opened for some reason and the clutch wont fully disengage. As for the rear sprocket, I changed my factory sprockets and chain for vortex and ek stuff. The vortex rear sprocket is very true compaired to the stock one, but for your chain to become so loose that it flops around during shifts because of the sprocket not being true then something is wrong..

a loose chain will make for poor shifting, i agree with above if you have loose and tight spots there is an issue. rearwheel is not perpendicular most likely unless the sprocket is bent. check your chain tightness, lube and rear wheel alignment. doubt you have anything bent. get your stuff adjusted and your shifting will improve.

When I set up a string alignment rack on my zx14, the string method shows the marks to be off by about 1 and a half lines.

Try loading the shifter as opposed to a full at rest shift. A good map is just that. My shift quality varied with different maps. I've read that this bike's throttle bodies can be syncronized although I've never seen a post about it.

Well idk if its the marks on the swingarm or the ones on the axle blocks, but yes something is off on mine. So I made new marks.

I 've been using royal purple 20/50 for 10's of thousands of miles and the shifts are like butter at 57,000 +miles.
Even the 1-2 shift can't be heard . The only time I hear a gear engagement is going frome neutral to 1st.
When she was new she was a bit clunky. My dads blue 14 is a tiny bit clunky and uses the same oil.
Mine is like butter

I agree with Bently's comment "that's just how the 14 shifts" and it was very noticeable when I traded my GSX-R1000K5 and hopped straight onto the Kawasaki.

I think I was trying to change too quickly and the 14 gearbox is that bit slower than the Suzuki, especially noticeable when you change at lower revs. Gearbox design? Internal ratios? who knows but it gets better when you are familiar with the bike and have more miles on it. Of course chain condition and adjustment can make a difference too.

I have never been aware of it at the track.
