Water pump mod

Has anyone done an electric water pump instead of the driven stock one. Buddy of mine say its good for 7-10hp when you take it all apart and sheer off the fins. Have you ever tried to run in water? RCC turbos offers them...not cheap tho..about $300..

What you think...

anymore info on this mod? kind of confused on shearing the fins--how would it circulate the coolant? i have heard of the electric pump giving more horse power over the stock, but only in cars. i'd be really interested in this mod.

Electric pump primer:

Considering it is apparently only worth 6 hp on a big v8, I doubt you will see 7-10 on the bike. Maybe someone else here has experience with the pumps in a bike application?

Pull your water pump apart and try and turn it... you'll see what im talkin about.. then imagine it submerged in water/coolant trying to move it..most V8's dont rev to 11K either..

Its mostly there for reliability.. much simpler for a mechanical pump, dont have to worry about it ever going out and overheating the motor. Could be a good option if your searching for every HP to free up..

Then buy your self a light of some sort to wire into a hot wire from the pump so you'll know if it ever goes out, pumps NOT on..

Interesting! After reading Shane's link and looking at the pump in the manual, seems simple to fab an electric motor/ impeller to a cover plate (in theory). OR how about cutting down the stock impeller blade size slightly, keeping it mechanical? great food for thought! Bravo!

Do not randomly change the dynamics of the stock pump. It is centrifugal and by design velocity in the volute is converted to pressure. Reducing impeller size and increasing the clearances will have exponential changes in flow, ...reduction that is.

Sizing an appropriate electric pump would be much more suitable.

In the dirt bike world I have often found it beneficiary to clean up sharp edges in the coolant system,
In respect to the pump, one must be very careful not to change the flow characteristics, and dimensions of the discharge and body of the volute, and impeller for reasons described above.

Dirt bikes have very small cooling systems, no fans, and therefor it is very desirable to make the coolant system more efficient in respect to flow ( less hydraulic resistance= less energy required -parasitic loss-as well)

better cooling and more HP !
