What is the purpose of running 87 pump gas? what does it do? can it hurt the engine?

Its been explained to me a few times, but I can't remember. The guys that know what their talkin ab say to run 87 or 89 octane...

87 burns faster...which means it runs a hair leaner, not enough to hurt a stock motor !!!

I run 87 ... Got almost 53,000 on ol' Red and still runs like a turbocharged top !
