Timing advance for dummies
For those mechanical and technical wizards - where would advancing timing be of benefit?
A) Bottom end/low RPM
B) Top end/high RPM
C) Across the entire RPM spectrum?
Question arises from some dim memory of a post a long time back that suggested the stock motor benefitted from 4 degrees of advance. I can adjust electronically, so all three options listed should be available.

You need to optimize the timing on a dyno. Usually a few degrees will benefit everywhere and above 9500 rpms usually a few more degrees on top of that.
The exact amount of added timing advance will depend on fuel, cam timing, a/f ratio etc.

I personally never made any gains in ET from advancing the timing. Mine always ran best with stock timing and 87 octane or MR9. I'm sure there are small gains to be had but like y2k said you would need a dyno.

Maybe this will help answer your question. Here is the ignition map out of an '06 14 (21175-0084 ecu) Actually this is a base map. The actual advance may vary a few degrees depending on things like engine and air temp, altitude etc. Also this is the Cylinder 1 map. There is one for each cylinder.
