Anyone Tired a 180/55 on the track?

My 200/50/17 U-soft shinko is getting to the point where it needs to be replaced. It still hooks great at 30psi. But, I know its heavy and there ain't enough tread left on it for me to be on the streets with it....

Wondering if anyone here has had any experience with running an 180? Anyone problems with hooking? What psi? Anyone noticeable differences in mph?

My setup is stk wheelbase, stk gearing, 200suited, looking at another U-soft just 180/55/17.

I've run the 180 and 190 on some other bikes. The 190 lays a wider contact patch, so that was my preference on the 14. No difference in mph noted, around 16-18 psi.

Also have run the 180 and 190 Power Race with equally good results.

Stock wheelbase and you will hook with any of the Shinko's that fit your wheel.

I have run 180 for a good while, no traction problems with 6" over and 1.45 60'.
You won't have any problems at stock WB.

I've always wondered how many guys here are getting 120+mph in the 1/8 mile and 150mph in the 1/4mile... I've never been faster than 149 and that was last year. Im usually running betwen 146-148mph. Im thinking its the size tire Im running right now.

Im gonna try it and see what happens?

180 is all I've ever run on my 14 at 69" wheelbase. Currently running the 180-55 Power One, its bald as hell, but hooking like glue!!! It started as a road race scuff, and now I'm up to 165 passes on it.

I've run the Shinko 180 U-soft and worked good too, but not as good as the Michelin. But at stock wheelbase, it will definitely work fine for you. Give it a try.

At stock wb, I'd run the 003 reg shinko and not the ultrasoft, unless your track completely sucks. Stretched 9" I run the full bore ultra soft at 25 psi and hook good, but our track is prepped good. I also have the 200 (that's all I could get my hands on 2 days before the race) and I think I will go to a 190.

I think the 180 lays down a better patch than a 190. My 190 Shinko has about 2 inches on either side that don't touch the track. The 190 has more of a bubble shape vs. the 180 not having the bubble, its more flat. The reason its more flat is it stretches on the rim more and has much less unused tire. My buddys 06 14 runs the 180 and has a larger patch than my 190.

I found the opposite to be true. Perhaps It has something to do with inflation pressures. A few other guys might chime in here; I know this subject was discussed a while back.

The 180 is narrower, and you would think it make it spread flatter...but it is also a taller tire. Perhaps at very low inflation pressures it does spread flatter, but I always ran in the 16-20 psi range.

At any rate, ymmv.

I know this is contrary to most opinions, but I like the 200mm shinko u-soft. I must admit its partially due to the fact I like the way it looks on the zx14 (big tire balances out the big front end of the bike IMO.) But it is also used on top turbo bikes( JONES PERFORMANCE TURBO BIKE for example). Also in my unqualified opinion, I think it hooks better than the other shinko u-softs for one of the same reasons a M/T hooks.
Give me a chance I will try to explain!
One of the major factors way a M/T hooks so good is the fact that its side walls deforms allowing it to absorb rebound compression and static pressure much better than a stiff side wall tire. This deforming allows for more degrees of suspension variance and keeps the tire planted to the ground. In comparisons, the 200mm shinko has more material to deform before the energy reaches the hard side wall of the tire. Also ,as the 200mm wears it develops a wider contact patch then the 180 and 190. I know the 200mm is heavy, but the compromise has been worth it to me.
With all this said, I am considering running a 190 dragtec or a 190-55 power 1 next. Just my 2 cents.

I want to run the lightest tire that hooks, and for me at 69", that's the 180-55. I've run the Shinko, Shinko U-soft, Michelin Power Race, and now the Michelin Power One. They all hook great, but I've found the new Power One to perform flawlessly and allow me to run the most air pressure.

Can't speak for ninja boy but I just took off a supercorsa that had 1100 street miles and 189 runs and if it was not for a race coming up this weekend I'm sure it would have went 20 more runs. was not quite ti the wear marks yet. buddy is running the power one and it looks like it will go close to 200 runs as well.

I have had this 200 shinko on for 2 1/2 years now. 4000miles and 200+ drag passes. This tire still hooks with 30lbs of air, but I know its heavy and I want something else that will last on the street and that I can race with. It will interesting to see how much tire pressure I can run in the tire. I would love to run 25-30lbs depending on track prep.

Traction and more mph is what Im looking for...
Im will let you guys know how it turns out...

Ninjaboy where are you getting road race scuffs from and how much do they run.

All of them averaged near the same, around 180-200 passes. The longest lasting being the regular Shinko and the Michelins, and the least lasting being the Shinko U-soft.
I could have likely gotten as many as 250 passes but I don't want to push it.

One thing to note is that I can get just as many passes from a road race scuff as I do a brand new tire for half the price. The road race guys leave the center basically untouched.

Contact Richie's Tires. Cannot discuss his prices, but they're a good deal. Give him a call.

Hello Guys, all of the Shinko backed Jones Performance ZX14 turbos actually use 190 Shinko u-softs, not the 200's. We have tested the 180 u-soft without any spinning issues on a good prepped tracks. But in reality the 190 has over one inch more of usable contact patch than the 180 tire. I can't honestly say that I have seen a big increase in mph in the 180 v/s the 190. Suspension and clutch set up plays a huge role in tire spin also, so dont always blame spinning issues on the tire. For the money, u cant beat the quality or performance of the shinko. The Michelins are great tires for sure, but they can be a little painful to the bank account even if you are buddies with Richie. I have tested the new michelins with good results on customers bikes also. We have gone as quick as 7.61@194 on a shinko u-soft. That was on a 66 inch zx14 turbo bike. (not set up for any class, just for fun, slammed, garrett turbo, msbc-1 boost controller, mtc lock-up, Jones Performance secondary fuel system). Shinko's work!!! PERIOD! Im not just saying that because we are backed by Shinko/WPS, I would have said that two years ago when everyone else in the "in crowd" was saying that "you could not go fast on a Shinko, it just a cheap tire for a weekend warrior".

Thanks Chris for the info on the actual usable contact patch with the 190 vs the 180. I was told that the 190 is used in SS class also... If you dont mind answering whats the difference in weight between the two sizes (Shinko)? Or anyone cand chime in if you know..
I will stick with the shinko because I like the price and i've never had a problem staying glued to the track unless its just a real shitty prep.

Im going to be testing the U-soft 180/55/17 tonight...
Going from a 200 .... U-Soft
