No. Just cut it off. If you are not replacing the front sprocket use one end of the old chain before pulling it out to pull the new chain back through.

Aftermarket chains have a masterlink. If it already together we can assume it is a clip type, right? Yes, seperate it there.

Thanks Kawasakijockey, Fed Ex dropped off my chain and sprockets today. Yep chain has a master link. Thats a lot easier than removing the swing arm. I'm looking for a chain press now.

if you have never pressed one together, you'd be better off letting someone that knows how to do it, do it. i dont have a chain press, and im sure i could do it, but whoever brings their press over just does it. you dont want that link comming off, could be bad news.

If you have a Dremel Rotary Tool Kit and use the grinder wheel to remove the rivet
head on the stock chain link Then follow instructions with RK kit. .

I used a pair of needle nose vice grips to press on the new chain link. Works fine

Done that too and used a dial caliper to measure the distance between the inside of the
front and back link plates. If you used a hand press to mushroom the the pins
like rivets you can press them too tight. The RK kit is designed so this does not happen.
Or did you use a clip type master link.

I have to do mine as well and I figure I will go with a 17/43 for the gearing.
