I just found some interesting data regarding the different oil filters that you guys have mentioned.

First, if you go to this site and type in the manufacturer's number, it will give you the NAPA (which is made by Wix) number.

http://www.napafilters.com/filterlookup/

Then go to this site and enter the NAPA number.

http://catalog2.genpt.com/catviewer15/(0jxo2z55srytler2qymi4545)/Catalog/Results.aspx?ShowPics=1&N=599007+102001+4294945434&Ne=1000000

It gives you all of the dimensions and most interestingly, the flow rate in GPM. The PS (Powersports) series flow 2 to 3 gpm more, which is about 25%.

For example the NAPA 1356, which is the equivalant to the Purolator PL14610 flows 7-9 gpm but if you type in "PS" before any of the NAPA numbers, you come up with the powersports series which in the case of the PS1356 flows 9-11gpm.

I'm sure that the difference is in the filtering media, where the lower flow numbers probably mean that the media is "finer", but in my case where my bike sees mostly the 1/4 mile and LSR events, I suspect that the higher flow ratings would be more to my advantage.

I have also asked myself, what good is a super duper altra fine filter media if it restricts flow and therefore, bypasses some, or most, of the oil. I destroyed a V8 when a cam lobe failed and because the oil filter had an internal bypass, the filter did practically nothing. It was ugly.

Food for thought,

Tom

Very interesting! So the Purolator PL14610 , the filter I have been using since the 600 mile service flows 7-9 gpm?
I wonder what the oem filter and K&N flow?

Purolator is the same as the NAPA 1365 or the PS1365

It's the same as the PL14610 except about .825" shorter

Hastings LF-113 short and LF- 240f is the longer version. The 113 works good for the m14 and m14 sidewinder for clearance, and the longer filter works good when you need a little extra oil[LSR or street racing] ..........................Bill

Is there a pureolator/napa/wix/k&n filter that is shorter for clearance with a Brocks sidewinder?

Does it have to be shorter than the oem filter?

Ugghh Fram filters are the worst filter on the market!
Might as well run nothing cause when they fail they don't filter anyway or the filter bursts at will!
Maybe the cartridge filters are better but I wouldn't trust them.
I had 2 fail on me and that's enough.
Like my Bro fasterspider would say "Fram filters are made to fuck up fords."

wasn't there a problem with high performance engines colapsing fram filters and causing them to not flow a while back?

I have a suzuki samurai that never has to have the oil changed in it. Only the filter. it literally uses so much oil that it always has fresh oil in it haha. Fram oil filters work fine for it but that's about the extent of it.

Well that's an exception I guess . That fram has no work to do cause there's always fresh clean oil in the crankcase lol

Haven't tried the wix or napa. The don't stock em at pepboys of autozone and that's all that's near me so I use purolator.
Who stocks wix?

Hey Juanvaldex,

Is there a difference between the Napa Gold and the "Powersports" line of Napa filters?

They had them both at the local Napa store and they were the same price, looked axactly the same with a different label and weighed the same.

I found conflicting data reguarding flow rates and bypass pressures between the two.

Curious minds want to know.

Thanks,

Tom

I've heard that wix, napa gold, purolator, and K&N are the exact same filter... just different looks

WIX= Decent filtration and way overpriced.
Napa = again overpriced decent filtration.
Purolator = best filtration ratings in the industry
Fram = same filtration as Wix & Napa 1/2 the price. Shitty filter
STP = worse filtration on the market champ labs makes these
K & N = relabled Fram with a welded hex nut on it

Napa used to be known for quality parts but like EVERYONE else they now buy Chinese crap and put a NAPA logo on it. They ate trying to hang onto the "get the good stuff" logo but they aren't fooling anybody. There parts are very expensive as well.

With a Muzzy M14 exhaust the 2.5" short filter like the OEM will only fit.
I need to research the K&N filters and see if the HP-1008 for a Mazda
is made different from the K&N 303. Check valve etc. Good info.

That’s not 100% true. I run the same filter that’s in my wife’s 07 Civic SI on my zx14 with Muzzy M14 and I have about ½ inch clearance.

I can hontestly say I'm guilty for running the fram filter, but at lease I run the XG with the mesh screen and has a micron rating of 10 micron.

Check out this 20 million dollar Ferrari running the elcheapo filter. If you going to use Fram at lease buy the high dollar one.

Damn I didn't know that about K&N! Another reason for me to not like K&N lol!

Looks like I'm gonna stick with purolator!

Omg that's too fucken funny!
Guess no one told him about fram yet and he hasn't experienced a catastrophic engine failure cause of his filter lol!
