Northwest Ride
Hey there northwest riders! We're planning a ride next weekend! Anybody taken this ride?

We haven't been on it yet and thought it would be good to ask some locals what the road is like.
Don't know exactly how many of us are going yet. We'll be stopping around Vancouver to rest up and leave for home the next morning.
What do you think?

We'll start in Spokane on Friday around 7:00 AM. We aim to arrive in or around Surrey at from 3:00 to 5:00 the same day. We don't have to stop there, we could go into Vancouver or whatever. We'll just find a hotel in that area and stop for the night.
We'll leave early on Saturday to head back. The idea is to start early to avoid the heat of the day and the wildlife. The heat of the day up here doesn't happen until 4:00 in the afternoon, so that's a good time stop.
We're obviously not taking a direct route, but scenic one.

Looks like a killer ride. I am up in Sandpoint and would love to join you but am already committed to the SoundRider Rally next week in Stevenson, WA. It is a sport bike, sport touring and dual sport rally - should be a good time, made better by the fact that my "new" ZX14 is being delivered to me by the current owner while I am there. Can't wait to get my hands on the big 14 after many years of lusting after it.

We would hope to leave, or at least get a big breakfast starting about 7:00 AM. That is from where ever we stay in Canada. That would mean that you could meet us anywhere along the way between 8-9 AM. I imagine it may take some time getting through the border stop...
I didn't clarify too well earlier, but we plan to head up 395 up to Grand Forks on Friday ,covering the Canadian drive on Friday, and then hit the Northern Cascades, HWY 20, on Saturday on the return.
KTMforget, you'll have a blast on your new 14! I've got 14,000 on the clock in a year and it's only getting better each ride!! Sounds like a blast of an event, too bad we can fit it in!

Well, living in the lower mainland I have done the Canadian side of the ride quite a few times. You will have lots of fun once you get East of Hope. Great roads.
If you aren't sightseeing in Vancouver don't bother going there. Heavy city traffic from Surrey into Vancouver and back out. Just head East and check for places to stay. If you take Hwy 10 East through Langley there are several hotels you will pass before you get back on the Hwy 1.
I do agree with NorthMedic about the deer. Not too much for a problem until you get East of Hope. The Hope-Princeton Hwy after dark is very bad. Herds of the damn things grazing on the roadside. Also watch out for tourists in Manning Park stopping to see the wildlife. They just stop, get out of the car and walk across the road to take pictures of things.
Osoyoos to Rock Creek will entertain you plenty.

I have blasted HWY 3 from Pincher Creek in Alberta, all the way throuh to Hope many times.
I love that ride, and have averaged over 100 MPH a few times through that route.
I have only ridden it during daylight hours, headed west out of Princton, if you are riding in the dark also heed the corner speed signs.
It is one of the few roads in Canada I have driven or ridden with decreased radiaus turns... if you are not aware, and are pushing it hard, decreased radiaus turns will bite back!

Only three monthths and four days till I can get back out on the streets again.
Ride safe and legal , and have a ball!!!
Stories like this make me lust for a good ride.
I bought my 07 then lost my liscence three months later , it has only 4700 KM on it
Watch out for those deer .

Well the ride was a blast! Both sides of the border offered spectacular views, turns, and stops. Two days was probably too fast. I wish we could have stopped more often on the way. Next time I'd give 3 days for the ride, just so we could stop at more of the sites.
The 14 was a great bike for the trip. Though I may go after a seat pad that we put on my wife's bike ,(pics later), as it offers a much longer ride time before getting worn out on the backside...
We're planning another trip, hopefully before the end of September, to Glacier Park. Here's the unapproved map. Any riders interested?

Glad you enjoyed your ride. I just got my ZX14 last week and am LOVING IT! Unbelievable smooth, carves the corners, and the power! WOW.
If my schedule permits, I would definitely like to join you on this ride in late September. Are you planning on coming through Sandpoint on the way to or from Glacier? I can make it work either way, but that is where I am located.

I'm planning on a weekend ride throught Oregon with a neighbor who knows all the back routes in Oregon. He does a few weekender rides a year through there and like I said "knows the roads". He rides a Kawasaki ~wait for it~ Versys 650 and complains that he cant invite any of his fellow pilots at Boeing because they are all too slow in the corners. So if you are coming, you best be able to hang with some aggressive cornering. And dont count on there being that many straightaways to catch up- I've google earthed his routes and I never knew there could be that many corners strung together without a turnout or straightaway! Ever gotten vertigo from looking at a map? lmao
It will not be tent camping as of this moment: we will do the bed n breakfast route since he knows where they are located at. Less gear to clutter up the bikes look and balance he figures.

A Connie 14 seat with the ZX-14 hardware will bolt on. Much softer for long rides.
A 10 minute swap. I tried the air bladder and you move around too much in the turns.
Got my seat from flea bay $125.00. New for about $275.00 Ron Ayers.

someguy,
I would definitely be interested in the september ride, let us know the dates when you figure them out. On the seat thing there is a place called Rich's in kingston that builds custom seats using your stock seat. He did my dad's seat and it turned out really nice. Costs about the same as a corbin ($400 i think) but made to fit you. The downside is you tie up the better part of a day getting fitted and waiting for your bike to be ready.

Port_Angeles & Lab3,
I've been thinking of getting a seat done for long rides. Rather than modify my stock, I was hoping to pick up a cheap, used seat to have modified. I think it'll be a winter project for me.
I've sat on the Connie seats at the dealer. I'm not sure if what they had were stock, but they were some sort of Gel seat.
Here's a pic of what I got for the wife. It wasn't cheap, but the results were suprising. She didn't fully appreciate it until we took a two hour ride without it, then she was really wishing she had it on. She's 5'6 and can't sit flat footed on her bike, so this challenged her a bit, but she won't go on a ride longer than a half hour without it now.
I rode it a bit on hour trip last week. It's not that it feels great, but that after a couple of hours, you're suprisingly not sore anywhere. However, as mentioned by Lab3, leaning off the seat for hard core canyon rides is not recommended on the seat. It can be done, but it takes your concentration from the road to your butt.

I found for sporting rides, when hanging off the seat, I didn't get numb bumb at all.
Just too much active movement to get sore butt, as it really wasn't stuck in one position at all.
I am fairly active with the throttle and try to make the ride entertaining, if the corners are broad I just wick it up and hang it out. My but doesn't get sore even after 9 hrs on the bike.
It was the boring speed limited rides where I was a good boy for hours that bored and sored me.... if i am going to ride like that I might as well have air conditioning and a good stereo to enjoy
That might be a good addition for the wife's bike.
Where did you get it and what is it?
