GT30 turbo and oil restrictor... and no water cooling..

This reply from Himni Racing in Fla about an oil restrictor for the Garett GT30 turbo:

"... the turbo should be used with water. Not doing so will drastically decrease it's life. Without water, the turbo has 12-14 months life span. With water, countless years of performance will be had. Not using water will also void it's warranty. If you don't use water, you should drill the oil fitting out to a .070 size. (Twice the size of the hole that's in it now). Careful not to go too much as it will cause issues too."



hmmm.. what do you all think? I haven't heard of anyone using water cooling on a bike with a turbo yet...

They are covering the bases for warranty claims. Garrett writes the warranty stipulations and dealers have to enforce the stipulations. That turbo is used in a number of applications besides bikes. That larger hole will help more oil carry away more heat but it is still not nearly as good as watercooling.

JDC, I would not enlarge the hole.
I would rather burn a turbo than a set of cases, crank, and rods...

Thats just my opinion though.....

hmmm.. what do you all think? I haven't heard of anyone using water cooling on a bike with a turbo yet...







I had used a nitrous jet @ .050 in the oil supply line to the turbo ... worked great.

As for water cooloing the turbo ?? ..... I've never done it on any of my turbo bikes.
Garrett makes "non water cooled" center sections, I might guess if it was a big
problem they would'nt make em.

Oh ~ and 12 to 14 months turbo life with out water cooling "BS"

My old bike is 2+ years and still going strong.

The stock hose is much larger volume than the restrictor they sent, and going to a .07, though double from their restrictor, is still a huge amount less than the full opening of the steel hose.

I'd think the engine would be safe if I have not had any problems so far with the feed line full open? I don't know the size of the steel feed hose, but diameter wise, it's gotta be maybe, poor eyesighting it, 10 X the dia of a .07?

Thanks for the info on the .050 restriction you used. I recalled you were very happy about the life of your setup, and not a word or using water. The few things I've heard about water are that it makes the 14 run hot.

I know back in the 60's we'd change the thermostats to cooler ones, but I haven't heard of different thermostats for the 14.... but you know, for the M109 initially we thought you also could not get a higher flowing FI either...

So far seems to be a safe idea to increase the hole to .05 to .07.

Bob, I know nothing about nitros, where did you find that specific nitros jet?

Initially I've was thinking that perhaps I could put the restrictor straight off the oil sending T, then attach the oil feed line to it.... but then I'd think the hose would have to 'fill up' the entire length before any oil actually reaches the turbo. Seems a bad idea.

I just used an old nitrous jet I had laying around and drilled it out to the .050. I worked
out perfect with the AN fitting on the oil supply line also !

I have not used .05, or .07 bits before. Is that metric or? The hole size seems like a jewlers size bit.

x2 .. i don't even know where to find 1 .. smallest i've seen is 1/32 bit and i'm sure i'd break it ..

That would be easy to find. A 1/16 bit is .0625.

water cooling is mainly for cars. think about how hot a turbo gets under a hood compared to in the wind

kawa.... yes. it is perfect!

Now that I have the stuff off...




1/16 new hole -vs 1/8" hose opening, which has 4 times the area than the .062

so I'd guess it will flow 4 times less oil?

When you used the .05 to restrict the oil flow, were you also using an oil psi gauge?

If so, when your engine was warm, what type of idle psi did you have?

On mine, after the engine is warmed to operating temp, without a restrictor, and the oil psi pickup, oil feed line to turbo, and OEM oil sending unit off of a double T, the digital oil psi reads 0 until I get the revs up to 2-3K....

I am hoping that this changes when I install the restrictor.

not by much .. when i had my gauge on at idle i had 10 to 20lbs of pressure ..and i had installed a high pressure oil valve

the high pressure oil valve only changes the high pressure limit before the valve opens and bleeds down, it doesn't change anything except the max pressure the crank etc will see, before it releives to the sump,

The restrictor to the turbo will decrease the flow to the turbo, therby increasing flow and pressure to the motor,

yes i understand that .. 100 psi didn't happen until around 8k rpm .. but everyone wonders why the chain tensioner rattles at idle ..and from my findings it also depends on which oil you use also ..

Robert, did you notice if the releif vale controlled properly, did it maintain 100 PSI, or did it blow down to below 100 PSI when it dumped, then closed and began cycling?

I agree with your previous statements about preventing it from blowing down all together, for my concern as stated in my previous sentence.

Lyle it maintain around a 100 psi .. My gauge was max and only could read to 100psi ..so if it was above a 100psi i had no way of knowing
