helmet cam

would this be a useful learning tool or would I just look like an ass with a camera strapped to my helmet?

They work good, but best if you also let the guy riding behind you wear that camera so he can record you.

The only person who would think that camera looks funny is YOU. Trust me, I went through it myself.

If you mean for the dragstrip, I think you have seen my on-bike camera. Very useful, but I don't know about helmet mounting since the pov moves around.

For drag racing, find yourself a buddy to record you from the fenceline near you. best way to see what you are doing right/wrong.

Or, you could mount your video camera on a mount I'm trying to sell, and it would look something like this; http://s67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/iflyphi/?action=view&current=drags.flv

Or this; http://s67.photobucket.com/albums/h300/iflyphi/?action=view&current=Untitled.flv

This is the mount I use;

And, did I mention it's for sale!!!!

I found that the on-bike camera was better than an external in some cases. You can really hear how you are engaging the clutch, and getting in throttle....without the roar of other machines drowning it out. You can see exactly where at on the track. Plus, with the small camera you could video a lot of aspects of the bike.

I think a combination of both types is excellent. Once I add my data logger, then I'll be completely covered.

I've used this one: http://www.vio-pov.com/
I used it on my jet ski, and really liked it. It's expensive, around $700, but it works fantastic. It has a ton of mounting options, and the quality is great.

It's an all in one unit. It has the head/camera, attached to a long cord, that goes to the recorder, which also has a viewing screen on it. And, it's waterproof, and shockproof.

If I still had my dragbike, I would mount this at difference places on the bike, for every single run. Watching your own onboard video really helps you remember what you, and the bike did on the run.

It's not motorcycle related, but here's a video of me on my jet ski so you can see the quality. Keep in mind this video has been compressed a bit, so the actual quality you get is a bit better than what your seeing. Also, keep in mind they have a 30 day moneyback guarantee, so you can't go wrong.

I have two things to add to this thread.

Firstly: a friend of mine was seriously injured on the track by a camera mounted on the tank of an RC30. It gave him some nasty internal injuries to go with the broken leg he sustained in a crash. Don't use a tank-cam.

Secondly: in our MCN this week was the story of a guy who was knocked of his bike by a car emerging from a junction. The fault was with the car driver who turned out to be an off duty cop. They noticed his on-bike camera and looked at the recording. Unfortunately he had filmed himself doing some highly illegal stuff and went straight from hospital to prison.

I'd rather leave the camera work to someone else.

In addition to any potential dangers, a tank mounted cam is not adequate for racing, imo. You can't tuck with it there.

I think we are talking about primarily racing apps in this case, not anything illegal on the street.

I agree. When I had my camera mounted on the tank, I could not fully tuck under the windscreen. If you watch that video, you can see the camera start to tilt upward towards the end; that's me trying to lay on the tank.

It did serve a purpose, and was cheap, but there are better alternatives out there, and safer. I would never turn the thing on if I was going to play on the freeway, as your just gathering evidence. I would just use it for the track, to analyze a run.
