Help me with my drag racing techniques and set-up
I know I need more time at the track to improve my times, but the best 60' I've done is a 1.69. I am getting a physical on Monday the 20th so I can get my nhra license. I have been running 9s when the bike is lowered, but I've only had 3 all out passes in the 9s due to getting kicked off the track without an nhra license. When I'm hitting it real hard out of the hole, the bike seems to just want to wheelie, and I still have another .15 seconds I can take off my 60'.
I've been doing some reading, and Shane referred to the technique as a "snap and slide" I believe. I was pretty pleased with myself because I had found that to be the best way to launch all on my own. Hit it hard initially to get it rolling out of the hole, and then slide it the rest of the way out.
I also talked with Jesse James over the phone yesterday, and he said his best 60's are when the clutch is out by the time he hits the tree. I just find that so hard to believe, cause he said he is also going full throttle, and just using the clutch to modulate wheelies........ INSANE!!!!!! With stock wb that just seems IMPOSSIBLE!
I have stock suspension and it's pretty much cranked right now (rebound and compression). I weigh 235-240 unsuited, and obviously the bikes suspension is pretty soft for someone my size. I think I need to lower my tire pressure to around 20psi (from 35psi) at the track. That will help squat the bike instead of wheelieing.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and help me out. My best 1/4 is a 9.89, and it was my very first pass this season. Since that time, I've not really been able to push my bike as hard as I would have liked (due to not having a license). I'll be racing on the 24th, and I'm going to go with my guns loaded. Help me hit a 9.50. I know I can do it. Here are my mods
Orient Express (Jesse James' system)
pciii
no flies
strapped
links
tiger undertail (I ordered it last night but I will have it on by race day)
redline oil 10w40

Also, I forgot to mention. Putting more money into the bike is not really an option right now. So, if you suggest buying new springs, also suggest what I can do immediately to make do with what I have.
Thanks!

Your 60' is good but then I dont know how long you been at DragRacing...The more you go the better you get by using the " Snap n Slide " ...What JesseJames said is not Impossible, it's what needs to be done and it takes time some longer than others so dont rush it, it will come to you!!!...If you do rush it, all you get is wheelies...Also, some times it's best to modulate with the throttle for a smoother launch so you dont get the pogo wheelie effect, but either way it damages your ET...
I dont know what you mean by having the rear shock cranked, but I have a feeling you do mean full stiff on compression and fast for rebound...Full fast rebound will make your tire spin...You need to soften up your compression up and slow down the rebound, THEN turn the rear spring collar at least 3 turns clock wise for your weight...Then check to see if the tire hits the tiger tail...If so, then turn 1 full turn and test again...The spring needs to do most of the work!!!...By the way you need to go for a half hour ride to warm the shock up before TUNNING the rear shock...
Im all about making do with the bike you have!!!!!...You dont need all those mods if your not competing in heads up competitions!!!!!

hey go fuck yourself! What is constructive about that advice? Why did you bother posting? STFU There's plenty of racers that mentor newbies on here that will be glad to help with what they know AND have the ability to teach it. Gadson was a fucking rookie at some point...pffft!

1badzx12r try and help in a posative way , we are all just trying to improve our bikes and times . Very few people on here with your attitude ,
This forum has changed my view of Americans , and even you wont change that.
I think you need medication and a good root .
Do you talk to people like that in the real world?
Try and enjoy life , you only get one shot at it , and after we are gone it is the impact we leave behind that counts.
I notice that some of the nicest people on here are the best riders , and still humble.
Good luck with your future!

Found out the hard way when the mph dropped 147 to 141 that the stock clutch is not up to the task. What was assumed to the be wheel spin, and some of it was, checked out to be a weak clutch. POS only 31K.

hahaha.... Only 31k. The best thing I ever did was hit the "ignore" button under 1bad's name. Now I don't even know he exists. I had to read darins (dcjens) post 2 times because I thought he was responding to Crotch Rocket!!! I thought to myself...... I'm guessing 1bad had some stupid comment, and yes, I was right. Anyways, thanks for the advice guys. Any more?

Like Terry Kizer told me at HRP a long time ago, "if the motor sounds like a lawnmower hitting tall grass you aint doing it right". Me personally..I have hit a lot of tall grass in my day.lol Once he told me that it was like a light switch turned on and I focused on fixing that KNOWN problem.
It comes to you if you KNOW what you technically have to do. Me and 95% of the guys on this board dont have it down yet. Seat time and patience man...

"Hit it hard initially to get it rolling out of the hole, and then slide it the rest of the way out" .. This is true BUT if you hit it to hard initially you will left the wheel right at the stagging beams and the bike will keep coming up higher and higher ..The trick is NOT to lift the wheel at the very start.. If the wheel is flat on the ground and the clutch is out you can pin the throttle without a wheely .. Get your body as far forward as you can get it and STAY THERE .. If you slide back at all you will start to wheely .. Use your arms to pull you forward and keep you forward ...After you shift to 2 gear you can slide back and tuck in ..I can pull of 1.50 flat 60s this way at stock wheel base .. But it's a super fine line between wheeling and keeping it down on the ground , if i slip up and it's wheely time ..
Look you are not going to get this over night , it takes time and lots of feel to get it right .. It has to become automatic , meaning you don't have to think about it because it just happens on its own ..You have to get the feel for what went wrong and not have to ask someone "what did i do wrong " Some guys get the feel ( the touch ) faster than others and some never get the feel ... I have worked with many guys on this , Jesse being one of them and it just takes doing it over and over tell you get the feel ... Don't rush it , take your time ...Your best runs will be the ones were you didn't over think it or you didn't push so hard .. The harder you push it the worst it will get , if this happens back off , slow your roll , calm down and try again .. Drag racing a motorcycle is like playing golf , you never loved a game so much that you hated so much at the same time ..A pro golfer will spend 12 hours a day working on his game , the one that spends one day a week working on his game is not a Pro ..

The difference is have you ever done it?
Get someone in the know and check history!
Are you that
scared of an initiation that you know you need to talk like that!
If you ever get brave or stupid enough to get into trouble , you will need to learn to shut up or put up , coz in jail you would be making cups of tea and gargling protien!!!!!!!
Like I keep saying good luck with what you choose to do in life , now can we treat each other as fellow bike riders!
