New to dragracing

I took my ZX14 to a local track yesterday and made a few passes, before these passes I made one attempt last year. I am no professional But I like to see what you think of my times.I was slow off the line worse being a 1.235 and best being a 0.863 RT.

1st pass :10.78@138.07 rt 0.923
2nd pass :10.55@137.82 rt 0.883
3rd pass :10.63@139.88 rt 0.863
4th pass :10.34@137.40 rt 1.235
5th pass :10.73@136.77 rt 1.210

I need to work on my RT'S and getting my bike to WOT as soon as possible and I found myself slipping on the seat as well, fix these few things I be hittin a lil better numbers.Pretty good for a beginner though dont ya think? I am hooked.

don't worry about reaction time unless you plan on bracket racing in which you still need to get the bike to run consistant numbers

Not bad numbers for your first time out. Do not worry about reaction time as it has nothing to do with your ET. Work on your 60ft and 330 times. I assume that your bike is bone stock? What do you weigh and what were your 60ft times?

reaction times are the last thing to come around. Once you get good at launching the bike, hitting your shift points and making good shifts, the r/t time will start to come around since you are not worried so much about the actual run. As nooby asked...what's your 60' times? That is what it's all about.

If your stock wheelbase and you ride on the street a lot, go with the reg 003 shinko. That's what I always ran and had great luck with it! (And you get 3x the miles out of it compared to the ultra soft) just my $.02

The bike isnt stock 16th front sprocket, alien head, tre008, K&N filter, PC3, speedo healer, soupys lowering links, 3/4 inch lower in front, foot shifting. I weigh roughly 220-230lbs with my gear on.

60ft et 2.036,1.871,1.967,1.800,2.035, all in order of the passes I made. On a brighter note I bet the B King and GSXR1000 I ran against...

The more you DragRace the better you get...

Dont be upset, it takes alot of time and Practice to get your clutch and throttle hand in sync for optimal 60foots...which gets you going fast...

This will help you with the "cadence" of a .500 tree.

This will help with the .400 pro-tree.

At this stage in the game, don't worry about reaction times. Your not going to beat someone that has been doing this awhile, unless they red light. Work more on launching the bike, and hitting your shift points at the same place.

It can take years of practice to get it right, and cut a good light, and now what your biking is doing down track, to bracket race. Even then, you can still, and will, redlight. Have fun.

Here's a video of the perfect pass, on my ZX14, with a pipe and power commander, on a .500 tree. This was a 9.59 at, I think 147mph, with an .001 reaction time. It was in Louisiana, and the heat index was insane, but you can get an idea by watching and listening to the pass, how to do it.

Me and my buddy are going to the dragstrip again tomorrow, me on the ZX14 he has a B King. I am pretty excited as far as I know there are gonna be two 09 V Max's there as well at about the same skill level as me and my bud. Should be interesting. Get some practice in see if I keep improving times and hopefully beat a V max...

Hi guys I dont often log in but read regularly ,I notice this thread and have watched iflyems video quite a number of times.
I have two zx14 s (zzr1400s here) one 06 and one 07 that has a bit of damage, I am putting a turbo on the 07 and may use that for a bit of sprinting/drag racing.......
Looking at the launch it can been seem that reving to 6000rpm or so and waiting for the lights the presumably the clutch is "fed" out is there any technique you can share with us how you ease the clutch to a point, roll on the throttle ,feed clutch out further etc etc.... I can launch my 06 from 5000 very quickly but have not really ventured above that, .......how difficult is it to flip these over??? I remember my last zx12 ....on one of those lazy days I nearly flipped it because i was not concentrating on what i was doing and it kinda sh....me up a bit...could of kicked myself...had the misses on the back.......
Anyway any fine detail tips would be very welcome
Thanks

I fed the clutch out very quickly. It was probably fully engaged by about the 60' light, and at about the same time, the throttle was wide open In fact, that was one of my better launches, and it just happened that the track was hooking up great, and so was the tire.

But, each bike is different. You have to get the feel for the launch, and practice. Just when you think the have the rhythm perfect, something will change, and you will either spin the tire, or wheelie. As far as flipping the bike goes, there have been a few that have nearly done that, and busted their oil pans.

Start off slow, and work your way into it. It can take more than a 100 runs to figure it out, and at most tracks, that can mean more than a year.

Hey NewF14,

My daughter and I are new to Drag Racing a ZX14 as-well and the ZX14 makes for a great choice.

The 1st. night and her 1st. time ever down the strip on a showroom stock ZX14 ended with a best ET if 10.1 at 140 mph. Her times progressivly improved each trip to the track with consistant 9.8's. For her 3rd. night at the track we prepared the bike with Brock's Lowering Links and Straps, Brock's HD Clutch Springs and a Catalyst Drag Step Seat (so she could touch the ground better) and ended the night with a 9.59 ET at 144.3 mph.

With this said, installing just the strap and lowering links will make the bike launch way better and your confidence will shoot thru the roof. These are less that $250 worth of parts and no more that 2-3 hrs. installation time and the bike can be easily converted back to stock in short order.

I've included a short video taken at No Problem Raceway a few weeks ago. The bike ran a 9.65 @ 143.6 mph.
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/Erica-Edwards-Stock-ZX14_701415.htm

Stay at it and best of luck to ya.

PC HOTROD,
Thats cool that you and your daughter hit the track together. She is posting good times for basically a stock 14. She is probably really light to which helps.
