1000-MILE TRIP, BURNT A QUART OF OIL
I took a trip from New Jersey to Cleveland this past weekend and when I got back I had to replace a quart of oil. I also heard from my members They see a poof of smoke every once in a while when I get on the throttle. The bike runs strong and doesn't seem to give me a problem otherwise. It looks I will be getting some major work soon. Does this sound like rings? Is there anything else I need to know before/during/afterwards? I won't be doing the work myself. I'm no engine guy. Any TECHNICAL input would be appreciated

Of course who would I be kidding to say I don't go over the speed limit. I averaged 100-110 going to Cleveland and when I rode to Mobile, AL...let's just say we made good time, lol. I know bikes are gonna burn oil at some point but I think a quart is a bit excessive.

at 100 -110 the rpm is ? 6500? Thats a decent sustained rpm....
If you run it at high rpm with the oil level over half on the glass, it will pump it into the airbox.
If you run it at extended high rpm, with it at half on the sightglass, it will starve under hard acceleration, or the top end won't get enough oil at low (1100 rpm idle).
Its catch 22 and would keep the oil at 3/4 sight glass and continue on without much concern
I put 10,000 HARD high speed high RPM miles on mine, borderline abuse some would say... they can endure alot of hard use.
If you want to prove my theory, pull the inspection covers off the airbox and wipe inside with a white rag.... very likely you will see wher the oil is going.
The only thing that would cause accelerate ring wear is dirt ingestion IMO, check the TB boots, I did find 2 that were alarmingly loose.

This very good info. I plan to jump on this first thing in the morning hopefully with little to no protest from the five year-old. When I first got the bike I noticed my boots were ridiculously loose. I will check them again as well. I will let the board know my findings.

butta4hc- In addition, you might want to check and see if the engine is leaking oil through the valve cover(some have complained of this)

My 11 leaked & passed oil. I kept a quart on standby @ all times. I sold it with 37,000 on it. Probably 20 of those were with a standby quart. I do have a leak up front possibly the valve cover coming from the left side of the bike. After a long trip i have a few drops that have sprayed back onto the fairing that meet with the lower fairing. Never though of it as too big fo a deal as long as it wasn't on my rear tires or rearset. It looks like one way or another I will be dropping the motor. I may wait to the end of what most people call the "riding season" to do it. I will still look into the airbox though when I get a chance. The lil one kept me busy over the weekend.

I know my passion red 14 just turned 50,000 then got stolen out of my garage by some douche bag who bottomed out my bike on something and took out my oil pan and dumped her on both sides. But before that she never burned a drop of oil.

I got it with 1200 race miles on it. I got over 13,000 on it now. Mainly highway. Barely cruise around town with it. Had two other bikes for that.

What type of oil are you using... Some brands evaporate more than others due to high heat conditions. Amzoil and Mobil 1 are 2 oils with low evaporation numbers. I ride with a buddy with a V rod that burned a 1/2 quart per 300 miles on Harley synthetic; switched to Amzoil and now burns zero between oil changes.

You think the harley used oil bc it evaporated? That's a new one to me. Anyone know anymore ab that?

http://micapeak.com/info/oiled.html
"Flash point is the temperature at which an oil gives off vapors that can be ignited with a flame held over the oil. The lower the flash point the greater tendancy for the oil to suffer vaporization loss at high temperatures and to burn off on hot cylinder walls and pistons. The flash point can be an indicator of the quality of the base stock used. The higher the flash point the better. 400 F is the minimum to prevent possible high consumption. Flash point is in degrees F. "

This is a water cooled Harley as you know. The Porsche motor isn't designed to burn oil as the traditional air cooled.

Also check the clamps on the intake manifolds for tightness . I have seen a lot of the earlier 06-07's with a bad back fire that was caused by this. I think i see in your post that you may be want to get into that motor for some hp up grades. Hee Hee! Have fun.................Bill
