Why Is My 14 Burning So Much Gas
Something is definately wrong with that bike. I filled it up yesterday an headed to one of my friends house. Now keep in mind that I was riding on I-40 In NC cruising around 80-85mph at times. Before i could go around 150miles before my gas light would come on. Now it has the same map, stock sprockets and everything, I haven't changed a dam thing on the bike. Well yesterday i had only rode 80 miles and my dam tank was empty, I had to pull off the interstate to get gas. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?? Something else I've noticed also is that I use to could dump the clutch in 2nd gear and do a pretty long burnout. Now when I try it it might turn the tire over maybe one time then it grabs and go. Something is not right. I do know that I can hear my cam chain rattling but I dont know if that has anything to do with it or not. Someone told me that I might have a couple of partially fouled plugs or something. Do you guys have any idea what might be wrong??

The bike has an Average mpg display and will also show Instantaneous mpg and Range. You ought to be able to see where it's using fuel and under what conditions.
My bike averages around 45mpg at 85mph cruising on a constant throttle. On the other hand it drops into single figures on WOT at maximum rpm. Just depends how it's being ridden.

80 miles on a tank of gas??? Wow! You difinately have something wrong.... how many miles and what year do you have? Are you still covered under warranty? Besides the long 2nd gear burnouts of the past(I wouldn't dog my bike like that repeatedly but to each his own), have you seen any other power reductions(1st gear power,3rd-5th gear pulls)? Do you have an aftermarket pipe? Power commander?

Honestly, guys that ride like this really don't deserve to have bikes like the 14.
Anyone that dumps the clutch in 2nd to see how big a burnout he can do, is a moron.
The dipshit has obviously fried the clutch and doesn't have enough mechanical aptitude to
figure it out.

Thanks for the only sensible reply and not the smart ass reply like these other assholes. Geez you can't even ask a simple question, I thought this is what this forum was for but anyway as far as the burnouts I dont do a lot of those, I might do one every blue moon, tires are too expensive. I have an 06 with 8000 miles, fully muzzy exaust, power commander. I think im going to check the plugs and just take it to get a custom map because the one in it now is a generic map I got off the Power Commander website.

Fuck you!! If you can't respond in a respectful manner than keep your guydam mouth shut bitch!! I thought the purpose of this forums were to talk about zx-14's and share resources and to gain knowledge of our machines. I've been riding bikes for 15 years mutherfucker I was just asking a dam question. Ok maybe it was a dumb question to you but to me im just trying to figure out whats going on. If you can't be respectful and use this forum for it's purpose then maybe you shouldn't be posting.

dhobbs74- It's cool, it takes all kind to make the world turn... You'll find personalities on both sides of opinions(optimist/ pessimist). But ultimately this is your bike- your problem- your money to fix. So if you need info, request as needed.... There are still some other questions that may help to further help diagnose your problem.
Now keep in mind that I was riding on I-40 In NC cruising around 80-85mph at times(your quote). Can you remember what RPM were you humming at? What type of fuel did you put in(octane?)?

Ok, maybe Moron was a bit harsh.
How bout Knucklehead?
You've obviously F'd up your bike. These things are to heavy to do 2nd gear clutch drops, even if you're a flyweight. 1st is plenty impressive.
I would look at the clutch, as it may be slipping in the higher gears and you may not notice it.
If you had a couple fouled plugs, it would fall flat o it's face.

I understand that but to be honest i've only maybe done 3-4 burnouts in the whole two years that I've had it. I normally dont do burnouts because I think it's not good for a bike but we all are guilty of it at some time or another. I have noticed that it idles very rough at initial startup until about a min and then it clears up. It never did that before. It's always had a decel pop at a certain rpm but latetly it seems it's gotten worse. Maybe I need to check the clutches but dam it's only got 8000 miles on it and I dont ride it hard, I might do a couple roll on's here and there but thats about it.

If the decel pop has gotten worse, it's a "rich" sign. If you've been riding in dusty conditions, it's possible the air filter is really restricted. The rough idle on startup could be something like a MAP sensor, or if the fuel quality is suspect, you may have some leaky injectors.
Best bet is find a decent mechanic, whether at a dealer or an independent. Someone that has the abilty to plug into it and see what the system is doing. Good luck.

Has the temp and ambient changed during your better mileage, months/weaks ago? You might remove the hot side (+) of the PC unit. Fill the tank, take it for a ride, burn 2nd to see if the fuel trim is too rich that fluffed the power ...
Ass far as 2nd gear burnouts... I'll slap that fucker all up is knock him off his 14 is why that guy cannot steer away from that ditch in 2nd gear is tell others what to do to or how to ride their own bike in any gear.
So shad up, telling others how to treat their bike. Go wipe the sweat off your mother's testickles if you have to make comments. Come get some, hobb knob big boring!

I have to agree with this statement. Get a supermoto bike or a beater. Youre gonna destroy a perfectly good bike doing dumbass squid stuff like that. The ZX14 is not gonna take big fat burnouts at 9000RPM and sip gasoline. Its a gulper. Ill bet your flies are out, and your around town mileage will suffer as a result. Straight line, constant speed, at 4k rpms in 6th gear I get about 45-48mph consistently. I have 25000 miles on my zx14. I have K&N air filter, new plugs, alien head exhaust, no flies, 42psi BTO 21 tires.
Ride it like a dope, get bad mileage. Ride it like an old person, get 50+mpg. On average, I get about 140 miles per tank BEFORE the stupid fuel empty light goes on, which I never trust.
Keep safe, ride smart, and respect the 170+HP thing betweeen your legs. Drive with your brain, not your balls, and you will ride a long, long, time.
Everyone rides like a moron sometime. I do it daily on my DRZ400SM supermoto. Every day, I do a stoppie, a wheelie, I back it in, and do jumps in rises in the road. On that kind of bike, its ok. Would I do it on a sportbike? NEVER!!!! The abuse is much worse on a sportbike!
Peace!

with the idiot gas gauge I consistently get 34 mpg (average) 160+range when the psycho pump comes on. if I use a calculator at the pump I get 34. My speedo healer is dead on by the GPS speedwise. I definetly get better mpg over 75 mph steady speed. I think our tank is 5.9x 34=200.6 per tank empty and pushing it. Let's hear some others (although I dont care much about MPG) damn!! somebody is PMS'ing!!!!!

I get no more than 120-130 to a tank...but, I ride it at 6-8K all day long...have 16/43's/pipe/stretch...PCIII and do 2nd and 3rd gear burnouts while rolling at speeds...80 to a tank seems just really wrong. Seems like there's a big fucking gas leak somewhere. Hell, even drag racing would get better than that...
