Going into Neutral

I got a question. A couple of times here recently when I've been riding and I go to shift into 2nd gear it has slipped into neutral. Could this be a problem or am I just not shifting hard enough? When it happened it was when I first got on the bike so is it possible that it might not have been warmed up enought or something like that? Thanks.

2 things --

1) Either you're not shifting hard enough
2) Your shifter isn't placed properly - more likely.

Adjust your shifter peg to the correct height and that should fix it!

Or worse if you have damaged the engagement dogs on 2nd gear. or a slightly bent shift fork. If it jumps out of gear under heavy load then you have problems. remember if you miss a gear, wait until the engine RPM dies down before putting it back in gear. but that's worse case.

I figured I wasn't shifting hard enough, but just thought I'd check with everyone. I would think it wouldn't be possible that the engagement dogs on 2nd gear are damaged due to the fact that I only have like 850 miles on it though. The 2 times it popped into neutral though I slowed down and pulled over and then put it back into first so no problem there big T. Thanks for the info though guys.

I have accidently kicked it into neut a few times too, unfortunetly i was in traffic and wasn't thinking at the time, so i tried kicking it back into 2nd without matching rpms, I don't think i broke anything, but whats a good way to see if I screwed something up?

I agree w/ BD. The transmisions are very deliberate. Its hard to pick a wrong gear or neutral by accident. Check the oil.

if moving your shifter and shifting harder does not fix it and you keep going into neutral you can get a shift star kit from muzzy.

I'm pretty sure the problem was me not shifting hard enough. Like I said it only happened a couple of times. I was just trying to rule out anything else if there was anything.

Shit happens - on my (3rd) Connie 14, the day I drove her home from the dealer, it got stuck in 4th 4-5 times and wouldn't budge out of it. It has never happened since in 2000 miles.

Try going into false neutral between 5-th & 6-th. I did, few times, up to 2 k. After that, never happened again. Now at 8.5K on my 2007, everything is just fine now. I can attribute it to break-in......or........just lazy shifting. Either way, do not get alarmed by some shifting glitches. I dos not necessarily mean your tranny has a problem.
