Big guy wanting to gearup!
Hello all, I just recently registered, but I have been a long time lurker. Im looking to do some gear work to my zx-14. I'm around 280 suited. I mainly do 40-60 mph roll-ons along with friendly drag races here and there. I do commute quite a bit seeing as I live 25miles from town, so Id like to be able to cruise @ a reasonable rpm.
Heres a pic of the bike

As you can see It is extended, I was told its extended 6 inches, don't know for sure though:-)

Well I'm only around 200 suited and I run 17/40. It's good for top speed competition, which is what I mainly do but will get you into the nines over a standing quarter.
I went on a 180 mile run yesterday and noticed that cruising at 85mph I was getting between 45 and 50mpg showing on the instantaneous fuel consumption, depending on gradient etc. That's up around 200 cruising miles from a tank of fuel. Not bad.

Ah, well I'm definitely not looking to go down in the rear I love topping her out, but thats where my fun is at.
What im really looking for is a rear sprocket that will be able to keep my big ass up with the liter bikes but also cruise on the highway between 4-5k.
From what I have read I think I would be happy with a 44 or 45 and a speedohealer.
Im also trying to stay away from going down in the front, from what ive read it prematurely wears the chain due how the sprocket is shaped

Remember that going to 44 or 45 will probably require a new chain, even if you can use the original I'm guessing you wouldn't want to shorten the wheelbase by that much.
Oops, just saw the extensions, maybe not a problem then.

haha, yea. I'm trying to find a good site that offers a good 44-45 steel sprocket and a speedohealer for a decent price.

17/43 is a Big improvment over stock and with a Speedo healer you can
still top out at 190. Shane ran this at maxton and ran 190 and I think he ran the mid 9's
220# suited, check his build post.
Wee 16/48 Damn I see why you did not go to the Mountains with us. Glad I have
not purchased a second chain for when I install my extensions and lower.

i've got about 10k on mine since i put the 16t on it. the bike has 15k total. If you take care of your chain properly you won't have any problems with premature wear.

Well shit, they called and said they didn't have the 45T renthal I ordered in stock, So I ordered a steel AFAM (42T) and a (16T) afam front sprocket. Didn't really want to go 16 in the front but due to all the talk about premature chain wear on 16 vs 17, But I got a deal so Ill take it

I doubt you will get 11K out of a Vortex rear on a ZX-14. Mine had wear marks on the rear at 3K. I use Driven steel sprockets on rear and OEM steel on front with a EK ZZ chain.
