Criminal Speeding / Radar Detectors
Sucks to be me ...
Got busted this weekend north of Phoenix, Az someplace called Yarnell Hill. Was thrid in line and the first bike around the corner spotted a cop, 2nd bike had rqadar detector warning so jammed on the brakes and ducked in between me and the rider in front. Not knowing why the sudden brakes I switched into the left lane (2 lanes going up) and got nailed by the cop for Allegedly doing 100 in a 45mph zone. (I guesstimate I was doing 70mph) Ended up with a 2 hour cop car ride to a jail on the other side of the county, spent the next day getting my bike back.
Shitty ass event full of things just not right.
Now down to business. I know that radar detectors can't 100% save you from a ticket, but by golly a few seconds of advance warning would a surely helped my ass out. Definitely would have got me just a regular speeding ticket, not criminal.
So now i'm the market for .. you guessed it ... a radar detector. One that will work for auto and bike needs.
To make Wee happy I'll say I checked out the Valentine One and it looks very promising. Also the Passport 9500ix. but damn, almost 500 bones for those suckers. So the V1 seems to be top rated in all surveys alongside teh 9500ix, they seem to be the top dogs. Is there something in either product line that offers the same protection but without the flare? I like the ability to flag hot spots such by pressing a button or such, saves from having to pay for a subscription fee for updates. Plus, what the heck is the USB port on a radar detector used for? Updates?
Also need to know about mounting options for the device too. Techmounts are good, but didn't I see somebody hard-mount one to their windshield?
Anyone know what bands are most commonly used in Arizona?
Lots of questions, sorry.
Pics would be great too! Window shopping is so much fun.

that $500 escort doesnt work any better than the 8500, I have both in my truck, V1 and Passport 8500, had a Bel RX65, you see which two I use, side by side test on all three, my test score? V1, 8500, Bel in that order, the V1 is just slightly better than the 8500, ive had my V1 for 12 years, about 6 years ago it stopped working like it shoud, sent it to Valentine, they repaired it no charge, just last week I sent it back to Valentine cause it wasnt working like it use to, they fixxed it free again! and didnt charge me to send it back! Escort will charge for those repairs, Valentine doesnt, its worth the $400 imho.

again....
I won't say its the best nor the worst, but it sure saved my hide.
I like the mounting system bell uses. Positive locking clip.
I have several suction cup mounts, I just move the detector around between vehicles
Heres the one on the bike:
quote]Just throwing another option out there...
I didn't like the bar mount, found it obtrusive:

Bell RX65 removed the cups for windsheild mount and bolted it to the windscreen with button head allens. The RX65 has a mechanical lock, so it clips into the mount, easy and secure, I used the marker lamp wire next to the headlight for power when ignition is on.
This set up saved my license, and worked great.

I'm sure you will get many opinions but for me NOTHING touches the V-1 for useful information, rugged construction and customer service and the ability to be upgraded with firmware. You will not be disappointed. Saved my butt several times!

How well does the Bell metal hanger hold up? Worried about the metal bending.
I have a Bell Vector 995 with the same interlocking mount, love the way it goes on with a positive lock.
Options for other mounts would be Ram. They have allot more options of mounting over the Techmounts.
I have both and I can tell you Techmounts have there limitations.

The metal clip worked great, no problems at all.
I had to use 2 rubber pads, I stole them off the kitchen cupboards! LOL to keep the unit levered steady against the screen.
You can see them if you look close, on top beside the metal bracket.

Threefold near bulletproof offensive:
Escort Passport 8500 XP (ultra longrange detection)
Radar Screamer ( loud but mutable)
Keen traffic observance (brakelights)and perspective typical ambush points, regular traffic enforcement areas
I ride at triple digits speeds on nearly every trip out, no tickets or fines and plenty of saves.
Well worth the cost, one ticket for thirty or forty over would pay for it all.

LOL, Ya gotta love speed traps, that is how I got a great deal on my ZX-14, guy got hit doing 150 in a 65 mph, went to jail, and sold me his bike when it was all over and done.
BTW, The Valentine One is a great radar detector, don't leave home without it

Yup, seems V1 is winning.
GPS is fun and fancy, tagging Cameras and Red Lights might be fun, but lets face it, most of us don't do triple digits in town, we do it out int he sticks were LEO's hide waiting.
Escort 9500+ seems nice for city/highway, but V1 seems better for the places we let loose and run wild.

Yep, Yarnell has been thick this year. That cop has been sitting in the same spot every weekend for the last couple of months. I heard tonight that they are doing photo radar in that area now also.

KawaBonzai...
Been there done that... My DPS officer was a little cooler he wrote me for 64 in a 45.. 1mph under. criminal ( I was going way faster...those uphill double lane 120mph sweepers are the shit!! )...still a $ 460 fine though....
Az. DPS uses VASCAR. It is a visual referance timed computer. they like to sit @ the top pullout and look down on you as you pas the heavy white lines they have painted and time your speedin ass. They also sit at spots on Az 87 to Payson..
Bottom line... DO NOT SPEED IN ARIZONA. It is partly why I sold my 14 and bought a dirt bike and will buy a BMW GS 1200 adventure bike next year.
Dirt and adventure bikes will be much more handy when the whole USA debt collapses and it is Mad Max time anyway

Each time I have gotten a speeding ticket it would have been avoided with a detector. No traps, just a cop with the radar on full time. Something that any detector will save you from every time. The won't save you from everything but believe me, they do help.
