about ready for a manual cam chain tensioner

My hydraulic one isn't working too good. Sometimes the start up rattle lasts longer than it should. Tonight when I started it, the rattling continued for almost a minute, so I cut it off. When I fired it back up, it done it for a second and stopped like it's supposed to. Figured I'd see what yall think about the APE piece.

Well other than the fact that the manual tensioner will be another part of the regular maintainence and that it must be adjusted properly as to not be too tight or too loose . It should cure all the problems of the dreaded start up rattle ...which mine does once in a blue moon lol

Rattling for a minute is a bad thing. You need to get that looked at. My 09 C14 blew it's motor with less than a 1/2 mile on the clock, and the 1st thing I heard just before that was a cam chain tensioner rattling badly for about 15 seconds...then it was bye bye motor.

I think the manuel tensioner is a worth while mod. While it will have to be adjusted periodicly, I ran mine for 2 years and 13K miles with the "installed settiing" before I
even went back in to check it.

I say install one ... check it with every valve adjustment you do and you'll be fine !

Hmm, maybe I need to let the dealer look at it since I got the extended warranty with it. Thanks.

Blackbullet76'' FBA is wright. If the noise continues that long something is going wrong. At first when we replaced the oem tensioner with the manual tensioner the theory was the stocker would fail, and they will with cams and or hd springs. The manual is not the real fix either because if you check it closely when installed' you will see that it actually hits the guide slightly off center. The more you have to adjust it the further it cocks the guide off center. This is with more lift and heavier springs as thats mostly what we build but i know of two 14's that lost the motor due to chain failure!! Its my belief that the 14 chain is not that good for heavy modded motors. I have talked to Eddie K, at vance/hines at length about this and when i get the spec's/pitch he is going to make a better chain if possible for these motors. The busa chain is a link wider and would be a low buck fix but its to long. I don't think you will have a problem with a stocker, but it is a weak link in the chain. HEE HEE........

Well, since I don't plan on doing any more mods to mine, will a manual tensioner be ok for me? I don't mind adjusting it from time to time. I had one on my 01 zx6r.

I haven't seen any failures on stk motors any way! I would however be concerned if yours is wrapping for the length of time you mentioned above. The manual tensioner will stop the noise i would guess, but whats the underlying cause? Might want to have that looked at..............Bill

The 12 tensioner will need to be modified to work, but it will get rid of the start up noise. I have to many 14's come in here with the chains just starting to kink up. Its something to look out for on a motor thats leaned on some. I haven't seen a stocker break one,but i have one here now and the chain is starting to kink. The only mod on motor is manual tensioner...................Bill

Does the 12 tensioner have a ratcheting style design? That's how the stock one on my 01 zx6r was.

My tensioner is also rattling a little more now.

I have the Concours tensioner sitting out in my truck. I am hesitant to install it because you have to remove the valve cover and such to install it because you need to poke to retainer away to release it.
Not much room under there!!!

I have access to the APE unit also.....

Just bought an APE manual, will install tomorrow. Raced a CBR 1000 RR in first gear and on the shut down in first, chain rattled like a dog. The gear driven CBR 250 RR is far superior in design. Have hated autos for a very long time.
