front axle
So just put some new pilot roads on the bike ('06 14) and got the rear installed without a hitch...having some issues with the front though. Didn't have the right stand for it so I put the front tire on the ground after I stuck the front axle and washers through it, hooked everything back up (fender and brakes) and started screwing in the axle nut and about killed myself. Is it supposed to be so hard? I have one of those nut adapters in each side and a wrench on each, got it screwed about half way in (the two front bolts on each fork are completely loosened) and now I can't budge it any more (can't even back it out without herculean effort). Don't think it's stripped, but not entirely sure. Any ideas? Thanks!

Oooh that front axle is supposed to thread in freely with minimal effort.... Also the left fork leg where the axle nut goes is supposed to stay in and you dont loosen the fork pinch bolts.
I hope your axle is still good but it don't sound good....

So you tried to thread the axle in with the full weight of the bike on it? No no no.....bad move. Those threads are fairly big and forgiving, but it sounds very possible you still could have thrashed your axle. Plus you didn't do the front wheel bearings any good either If the axle didn't line up properly you could very well have pushed the bearing inner races around enough to trash them. Also be sure the bearings are still straight and equally set into the wheel, as well as the seals. You need to get the front forks off the ground, and use blocks (or rest the wheel on your foot) to get the wheel close to the right height, then as you thread the axle in move the wheel slightly so the axle threads in easily. Also as stated above leave the left side axle nut in and the pinch bolts tight. You only need to tighten the axle

I may take you up on that Bob. I took it back off and discovered the reason for it being so hard...apparently the front stand I borrowed from a friend had those two little poles that stuck up through the holes on the bottom of the forks...the poles were too long and protruded up through the holes, pushing the axle rod up against the top of the sheath and crossthreading/stripping it as I turned it through the nut sheath. I'm waiting for my new front stand adapters to get in so I can do it right, but just looking at the threads it doesn't look too bad. I'll tell you if I can still thread it through easily once I get the new stand. Thanks!
PS, this thread is rife with phallic euphemisms...

same problem happened to me. My dealer took 1200 ft/lbs to break the nut. No shit.
They grinded a little away of the inside fork where the axle slides in, and fits great now.
Over time, I think the metals shrink somehow. Happened one at about 22k miles. I dont ride super hard, casually on street, little faster in canyons.
Get a dremel and take a teeeeeensy rub where the axle slides through!

Yeah, I'm fu@#%^. Lifted the bike to get the front stand out from under and broke off the bottom of the fork. Can you weld these things back on, or do I need a completely new fork?

Personally I wouldn't ride on a welded fork, I'd try to find a used replacement
