Increasing oil level?

Got a weird problem going on with my 08. For some reason I seem to be gaining oil in the sight glass. I filled it 3/4 the way full when I did the change 200 kms ago and when I check tonight it was overfull to the point that I had to remove 350mls. Any ideas what's going on? The oil doesn't appear to have coolant in it nor does it smell like gas so I think I have ruled out fuel dilution or a blown gasket but am stumped to what's going on. The bike was perfectly level on race stands same as it was when I did the change. The bike still runs like a scalded cat so there is no engine problem that I can tell. The tech as Kawi told me I may have a defective filter as it should be the only thing in the bike that can change the oil level in the pan. Think I should change the filter and see what happens? Is it possible to change the filter without changing the oil? Sorry for the long winded post but I don't trust the local Dealership here and am looking for some help.

Had that happen on my first oil change. Never did figure out what caused it, figured I must have had the bike on uneven ground or something. Drained it down to midlevel on the site glass and no problems in the 8500 miles since.

How much oil did you put in?

I'd change that oil filter right away!

Are you warming the engine completely before draining it?
If the oil is cold and hung up on the top end and oil cooler, that may be your issue.

Some guys will start the engine cold , and shut it off cold, alot of oil stays up in the top end when this happens, wheras if the engine and oil was fully warmed it would drain back more completely.

Did you check it right after you rode it? Oil does expand when it gets hot. Maybe it's a combination of slightly overfilling it when you changed oil and then the oil got hot and expanded making it even higher in the glass? Just a guess.

Good luck,

John
