1/4 vs 1/8th debate.

Been doing a lot of debating with people lately who refuse to run 1/8th mile. I actually had a guy tell me that the 1/8th mile is for beginners lol. Here's the breakdown that I did for him on how a run down the dragstrip goes. Correct me if i'm wrong and I'll eat a slice of humble pie, but I think that the 1/8th is a riders race whereas the 1/4 allows for some goof ups on the bottom end as long as you've got the power to make up for it on the big end.

BTW, the discussion started with a turbo busa rider that sucks on the first half of the track and i was trying to bait him out to the track.

quote:
explain to me how you have to be a better racer for the last half of the track than the first half... Remember, the first half of the 1/4 mile is an 1/8th.

Here's what drag racing consists of...

stage (deep or shallow makes a difference in either mph or 60ft)
cut a light (where most bracket races are won or lost)
Launch (the absolute most crucial part of the race for shorter races)
Get your feet up in time for the 1-2 shift without upsetting the chasis.
get a good tight tuck where you can see your tach.

That takes care of the first 330ft or less. the rest looks like this.

Shift from 2-3
shift from 3-4
shift from 4-5

If the longer tracks take a better rider then 1/4 miles are for pussies since they're not the standing mile. If I had a 1/4 mile track here then I would run it instead of the 1/8th because most people want to run 1/4 and I like having more people to race against. Although I would not want to run a turbo bike in the 1/4 because of the fact that all you have to do is get it off the line and it'll reel a naturally aspirated bike in.

Food for thought.

Anyone who says the 1/8th is for beginners....must be a beginner.

I would love to race more 1/8th...but it seems my tracks here aren't prepped, or are dangerous, or both...

The race is over too quick. If you love to race, you want to be on the bike longer I would assume. That's how I feel. If it's the beginning, lets just change it to 60ft races. haha...that's the real skill right? You want to utilize the whole motor and short races don't do that. 1/4 is racing! : :

Well, the 1/4 is the full race. Just is. But I've often wished that there was an 1/8th miler close by. Hell, there's plenty of room at the track I go to build one. Sometimes I just want to practice the launches. There is talent and skill to be used on the big end, but Bawls I have to agree with the quote. Once I'm off and get my long legs up to properly shift into 2nd, the rest is tight as possible tuck and perfect shifts. Now, the bracket racing...there's all sorts of games going on at the big end. lol

Touche salesman... touche. Speaking of that... homeboy has resorted to flashing the fact that he has more money than me by saying he'll only race me for slips. I should buy a set of extensions, an airshifter, and a 40 shot and take his fucking bike.

I always thought that a good sprint rider was someone who new how to get the bike off the line and that's what makes the difference. The rest is fairly predictable.

I've been fortunate in that I've never had to run an 1/8 mile track. However, there are many tracks in the country that are only 1/8 mile, and you have to go with what you have.

I personally hate 1/8 mile tracks. I'm not very good at 60 foot times, and in the 1/8 mile it's critical. With the turbo ZX14, it got some legs. So in the last half, it really pulls hard, and I enjoy that part.

I've been drag racing bikes since the mid 80's, and I personally think that it takes more skill to run an 1/8 mile than 1/4 miles, especially bracket racing.
With the 1/4 mile, you have some wiggle room with your dial in, and you can still spin the tire and make up lost time. It's almost impossible to do that in the 1/8.

I've run both and enjoy both, but i prefer the 1/8 because of the challenge. there is far less room for mistakes on the short track and if you can't get it done down low, you not gonna get it done on the other end most likely. i hear so many guys say that if they run the 1/4 their bike will run better (squids) but all they gonna do is make that big hp bike make them look worse with a weak e.t. and huge mph!
its gonna be the same no matter which one you run though, Get it goin fast ASAP!!!! and chop and brake across the line!!

1/4 is too short. Spend a whole day at the track for perhaps a half minute of racing. No high speed thrill. Go for the full mile.

I don't care if 1/8th mile takes more skill....... I wish we had 1.5 mile tracks. I just like going fast! One thing that would suck at a long track though is there would be a lot more waiting. Do you 1/8th mile guys get a lot more runs in compared to a 1/4 mile track?
