Poll Question:
Wheelbase...Which Way Do I Go?

Suddenly (?) I am very indecisive...

Since I've got a whole 10 days to prep my bike...it seems like a great time to make a wheelbase decision. Those who follow my build thread know that I just prepped my 3-9" arm to go on the bike...to run it at about 64". But looking at the stock wheelbase bikes has me considering switching it back...with more of a street setup. It would be heavier, shorter, but potentially a lot of fun.

I really wanted to get it into the 8's this year...but I very seriously doubt I can do it on the stock arm....even with a dry shot. The best 60's I turned on my 12R were 1.7's, and 10.1's in the 1/4 with a bike/rider weight of 775 lbs. I'm looking at about 670 lbs. with me on the 14 now. So, give me your thoughts.....

Shane

Each way has it's appeal...

Mastering stock wheelbase is a real challenge...if you can ride it stock, you can easily ride a long bike...

But for pure ET you can't beat the long bike...

Tough call for me..

That's a good point, once the 8's are in the bag I can do whatever I want...

Shane, set it at 64-66 inches to get your 8's. Like Lee is saying ,do whatever afterward.

Shorten it up and shoot for the STARS........
Seriously, put it back to stock wheelbase learn to ride it and you may surprise yourself with how close you will come to the 8sec mark.
I honestly believe a 30-40hp dry shot can get you 8.9's at stk wheelbase.

Go for it.......I wouldn't lengthen my bike unless an arm was given to me.

I love mine since I moved the rear tire out!at 9" I can tell a little more than I'd like on the street, but its worth it to me to be able to launch hard everytime and not have to fight any kind of a wheelie.

Had to give up on stock wheel base. The turbo likes a load to boost and slipping the clutch don't make it. Bought a Roaring Toyz 2-8" adjustable swing arm add on. It is supposed to be good for 400 hp. If you leave at full power it's a sky claw, slip the clutch and the 1/8 is not even as good as a ZX-6.

Well, I'm going to take Smokin's advice and get that 8 second slip under my belt. Then later in the season I'll likely put it back short and take it to Maxton.

All focus from now on will be on getting it into the 8's, one way or another.

It was a world of difference launching with a little 5 inch stretch... had to relearn my launch, about 1000 rpm lower on street(traction), and relearn shift point for 1st gear, as I no longer needed to short shift to prevent wheelies....bit more difficult to keep the traction on the shift to 2nd gear on street though,
Also dropped tire pressure from 35 to 30 psi helped launch... again... street use...
Overall I picked up about 9-10 bike lengths over stock wheelbase in 1/4 on street pavement!
I think 2-4" over stock might help at maxton if accellerating still at the end of the mile on stock wheelbase. Like I said 9-10 bike lengths on shity pavement... was thouroughly thashing the bikes that were close before ....looked weak.

No nos, brocks pipe, no flies....airshifting! LOL

I think stretching bikes is kinda dumb. I guess you're chasing your magic 8 (which is cool), but stretching just causes problem and costs lots of money (new longer chain, means of stretching, sticky rear tires that only last 1k miles, and still fighting traction problems). Ride it at stock length! Maybe I only say that because I like to wheelie!

A stretched bike looks hideous to my eyes. That being said, if you want to limit power wheelies or drag race exclusively extend it.

What looks hideous to me are 9 second timeslips. I want to try to eliminate that problem. I ran low 9.3's last season at 63-64"; I'll be looking to better that soon.

Do like I do, keep it short for the street and stretch/lower it for the track. Takes me about an hour and a half to complete. I have an extra wheel and tire combo with 44t rear sprocket I use. Sometimes I ride it stretched on the street just to play, but I hardly ever take it out on curves like that. I put mine at +7 for the track.

+1 but only going back 4 inches and having your old Spencer Cycle Extensions
welded to a good used stock arm. Will take longer to switch to track set up but
99% of my riding is on the street.

Well, I won't be swapping it around. Just too much trouble for me....and I go to the track too often...

I'm not into carving up the turns, and a little wheelbase is still fine on the street, for me.

I'm going to use my new arm at least until I accomplish my 8.75 second goal.

I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure.....

Any reason you can't use two chains of different lengths with your swingarm?
