Last night's Drag racing was Good !!

Last night I made my every other week pilgrimage to the drag strip to have some fun. I got lucky with the weather for once and the rain stayed a few miles away from the track. Looking at the local radar on the iphone seems to be a new habit for me in the afternoons now.

The air was warm and humid but there was a slight tail wind at the track and I was pretty excited about seeing the flags flying in the direction that they were. I though when I saw that I'd have an advantage for sure. It didn't seem to help.

I ran a bunch of times and I was hitting the low low 10's with good MPH, but nothing new with the ET's. 10.05, 10.07, 10.02, 10.00....... then everyone had to wait for the track to be swept and VHT applied. 45 min' later the bikes were being called for our turn. There were only 4 other bikes racing last night besides me and they were all Harleys. The H/D's were staging and going and I was getting ready to go through the burnout box when some asshat in a ZO6 Vette came out of nowhere, stagged, and went down the track. The starter at the tree didn't want to make him reverse back out and hold up people so they just let him go.

I was pissed and I think I took it out on the bike. I launched hard and leaned as far forward as I thought I could so that I might be able to use a bit more of first gear. It worked !

I ran the following on that pass.

R/T .191
60' 1.71
330' 4.35
1/8 6.46 @ 116.48
1000' 8.28
1/4 9.83 @ 145.52

I was really suprised that I was able to "pull that one out of my ass" so to speak. I wasn't able to duplicate it but I also ran a 9.99, 9.94 and a couple more near flat 10's.

Earlier in the night, I had a few car driver walk up to me and confessed that they thought I was nuts. Well, they said that after watching a couple of my passes where the bike was again on 1 wheel for all of second gear. Those are fun, but not as fast. My 10.05 pass was all on 1 wheel in second gear.

I need to change back to the 17t front sprocket now. I'm a hair away from the rev limiter in 4th gear at the traps as I am now.

I'll try again in 2 weeks with slightly different gearing.

Way to go Beond! You guys are killin' me though. You run 1.7 and go 9.8's; I go 1.7 and go 10.2's. Arrgghh. Congratulations, and let me know how it goes if you swap back to the 17t. I've contemplated that for awhile, along with going 40 on the back after smokin's report. I'll be runnin' tomorrow night!!!

i envy your air... I ran 1.58 and 4.25 and only went a 6.40-6.43 with the stock pipes. Good job man. You're definitely getting it done!

hrm... zx10R, GSXR1000, CBR1000RR, GSXR1300, Vmax(with a jockey and TRE, and B-king.

But the chance of finding riders that can do that on them is slim lol.

That is correct Sir.
Stock height front and rear. The only thing I did differently last night was I took all the compression damping out of the rear shock, or at least as much as the adjustment screw would let me.

I really think that by going to the 17t sprocket that I'll run quicker. I'll be able to use more throttle in first gear and possibly reduce the wheelies in 2nd gear.
Second gear power wheelies are pure sex though !!!

Way to go Adam !

Low 9.80's on a stock height bike (no matter what kind) and being a non-jockey size guy is IMPRESSIVE.

I knew the bike felt stout but you're doing a great job too.

Keep us posted.

You give me Hope :-) I agree about 2nd gear wheelies being a Rush. How much pressure on the strap?

Thanks Dan. It must like the Repsol oil !!!
Fortunately the track I run at has has excellent traction and even with 38psi of air in the rear (42 in front) I've been staying hooked up on all the runs. 2 visits ago, I had traction problems in 2nd gear.

I leave about 3/8" - 1/2" of front suspension travel in reserve.

I hear ya'. As it is though I can only use maybe 40% of the throttle in first gear to keep it on the ground. I'd worry a little that a clutchless shift into second might be too abrupt but I'll try it my next time out.

Smokin' ,,,, thanks for the compliment. I appreciate the feedback on my results. I know that there are a bunch of guys active on here that have more experience than I do and that just are better riders. It's those people who I appreciate the most with giving advice and good insight. I'm just looking to raise a few eyebrows with some uncommon results with what I call "street trim". It looks like I'm on the right road.

I'm really looking forward to trying the stock 17t sprocket next. It'll be interesting to see the results. Besides, there are a couple of Harleys that do the test and tune thing that run consistant 9.20-9.60's, but I always have +2-3 mph on the top end over them. I may not beat them, but they are always nice towards me even though I'm on a "Jap" bike.

I'm lucky to race with some people who have faster bikes but suck on the tree lol. I find that the tree is usually my equalizer lol :P

Yeah Bawls, that would be me. I'm so damm inconsistant at the moment when it comes to drilling a good light on the tree that it's sad. If I go .100 or less, I'm happy. I used to be much better but it seems that I have (at least for the short term) have lost those skills. At least I've not been redlighting.

when your time is all that you're worried about you can sacrifice the tree to concentrate the launch. we also all run pro tree. put me on a sportsman, and i'll redlight about 40% of the time lol.

Congrats Man! A little trick i picked up with the tree, As soon as you see the last yellow...say go in your head then let the clutch out. We use sportsman lights. I think i would be the opposite from Bawls. I guess its all in what your used too.

I need to stage more shallow I think. I hate running a pro tree. The starter at the track was messing with me one time last year and setting me up on a pro tree just to F&*k with me.
Practice is what I'm going to need.
