10,000 miles and warped rotors?

Ok, For the last couple thousand miles I have felt some pulsating from the front end under hard breaking from 60+ mph. Well it seems to be getting much worse now. And from 100+ mph hard breaking its beyond anything normal.. Anyone had this happen? I sure that the pulsating is from the front breaks. Im under warranty, if its the rotors will they be covered?

I doubt your rotor would be covered under warranty, but its always worth a shot! My front end had a little shake in it when my front tire got 6,000 miles on it and got cupped.

Well its a new tire, no cupping or funny wearing at all. And it did the same thing with the old tire. Im sure that its a warped rotor or maybe the floating bolt things are getting crusty and seizing up??

I ride the piss out of mine in the corners..... Maybe I don't brake hard enough or it's an isolated problem.

I BEAT the hell out of my front ZX14 rotors stopping fast in the mountains, tail of the dragon, Cheraholla Skyway, N. Ga, etc etc and I noticed two things:

***they consistently stopped faster than one would EVER expect a huge bike to stop with little brake fade due to extreme heat

***they lasted over 14000 miles of that hell, longer than my litre bike rotors ever do (then the bike and I parted ways or they'd have lasted longer)

!9,000 miles, about 10 track days (1200 miles roughly) and I'm just changing pads. Cant believe the brakes work as good as they do!!!!!
try taking a green scrubber and brake cleaner and scrub the rotors. blow out the floating "bolts too.
My warpage cleaned up by doing that. Brake material deposits from heating rotors at track. They are still bluish from that abuse.

From Motorcyclist magazine, March 2009, long term testing of Kawi Concours, with regards to the warped rotors, Dexter Ford writes:

"As for the warped brakes, I took a page from legendary race car crew chief Carrol Smith who says there is no such a thing. What he believes happens is the brake pad material gets transferred unevenly into the disks if the brakes are clamped on when hot and stopped, creating a thick spot. He suggested sanding the disks with old fashioned garnet sandpaper, which worked. Total cost: $1 and 10 minutes of hard labor."

I for one will definitely be trying the above before accusing the disks of being warped.

Try a little semichrome metal polish on that rotor and clean again and see if most of the
blue goes away. It takes some time and rubbing but you will be suprised. I rubbed a Lot
on Shanes used M14 head pipes and ALL the Blue was gone before I installed them.

It was cold out and I was bored, I know they will turn blue again.. :-)

Do you think that semichrome metal polish will get the discoloration of my Alien head muffler? It turned a little brown near the bottom where it connects to the mid pipe.

Yes, email me labartay@charter.net and I will send you pic's of M14 after several

hours of hard hand rubbing. Then look on page 19 of Shanes build post and look at the

head pipes before a Lot of rubbing. It will take off all brown tarnish, I use a old white sock and a lot of rubbing. But the mid pipe and muffler will look new again easy. Blue on head pipes was a LOT of work with pipes in living room and a 6 pack ... :-)

I found the problem with my rotors are tiny pits from corrosion. After riding in the rain, water sets between the pads and rotor and electrolysis creates hundreds of tiny pits. It takes some hard riding to overcome that damage.

Took a leaf out of Carrol's book and sanded both discs (even thought bike shop stated RHS only was warped). Only tested at low speed around the 'hood but noticed an improvement. Will have another go at 'em with slightly coarser sandpaper.
I am impressed at the cost saving and ease of solution............thanks Faz and Carrol for the tip!

dumb questions - What is garnet sandpaper? Buy it at hardware store? What grit do you plan on using?

My rear rotor is "warped" and the tire grabs in one spot when I try to spin it on the rear stand.

Slates - Garnet sandpaper is for use on wood products. I wondered why I would use a wood only sandpaper on a metal disc but, ey, it ain't going to hurt it too much if it is the wrong type.
I used 120 and 180 grit and plenty of elbow grease.

Had same problem with mine at 6500. Kawi is replacing rotors under warranty but not pads. Been a long winter so have not been able to schedule repair as of yet but recently changed pads to buy some time. Changed with ebc sintered brake pads because the bike became unsafe due to the condition you describe. Better at the moment but not by any means where it needs to be. This is a safety issue that Kawi needs to accept accountability for. I would suggest you request replacement rotors.

Never know.................did wonder why Garnet was the 'flavour'. Bought some 'wet and dry' when I bought the Garnet just in case....didn't need to use it but still might try.

Gave the bike a decent run today and had to use front anchors at 120kph and use'em firm.......worked great.

Can't claim on Kawa...........bike is outta warranty
