Tire Balancing Using Beads?

I just had a new pair of PP 2C put on my bike, it was at a shop I had never dealt with before RPM Cycles just South of Ottawa (excellent price and service I will be back)…

However they recommended that for a small additional cost they could add Dyna Beads to the tire for balancing and therefore I would not be required to use the traditional lead weights to balance the tire.

From what I hear the benefits are (from manufacturer’s web site):
1. Smooth ride, regardless of age of tire.
2. Dramatically longer tire life
3. No rebalancing
4. No spoke or rim weights
5. Eliminates tire cupping.
6. Easy to install

In the end I had them put them in and will give it a try but does anyone have any experience with this product or a similar one?

I have emailed customer service at Innovative Balancing. Robert went way out of his way in several emails today about theri product.

1 The beads Will stick to the inside of a " Soft Road Race Tire".
Do Not Use.
2 I asked about the G force factor when a ZX-14 is launched and
would the beads still Balance the tire. He said the Beads are for
street use, A good answer for True, not for drag racers.

3 Robert did say that they are being used at 190 MPH and safe.

4 He stated that for 99% of motorcycle owners are happy with their product.

Great Customer Service. If I had a Gold Wing I would try it.

Lets most of us out .......... we are the 1 %.

I was told by someone that if you take off to fast even in a car, they cant balance fast enough. You would have to stop and restart slowly. I thought about doing this but read to many negitive reports..

Thanks all for the great info… it is still a little cold here to ride (snow is a bitch to launch on) but I am expecting that to change in the next 2-3 weeks…

As soon as I get a chance I will really try and put them threw the passes (as much as my ability will allow). It should be easy to determine if they are sticking to the inside of the tire (PP 2C are not quite drag slicks).

I talked to the gent at the dealership that installed them and he informed me that he has them in his track bike and has been putting them in the majority of the bikes coming threw the shop… I guess only time will tell!

If a blow-out happened on the track at, say, 150mph does that mean there could be Beads flying everywhere at 220 ft/sec? OUCH.

Good point. Another reason they do not reccomend the beads for racing.

That illustration shows how the out-of-balance movement, up and down, distributes the beads.

It seems to me that it would only work on a very smooth surface. Any undulations would totally screw it. They also say it takes a few seconds to achieve balance. No good for quarters or eigths then.

I'm surprised the shop mentioned in post #1 would suggest these for a Z rated performance tire.

You know admin, I really hate the way this forum allows you to fill in a response, all detailed out and all, then then looses it if you had not sighed in first!

Can't that be fixed? so it takes you to the sign in and then keeps your info and makes the post? geeze

Here are my thoughts about this.

Beads have been in use for a long time in balancing tires, bike tires, etc. I used them on my mountain bike about 15-20 years ago. They dynamically move to CF and 'seat' with very little tire rotational speed. Shifting about once the tire is in motion and above a few MPH is unlikely, and highly unlikely - not going to happen - at any appreciable speed.

Take a glass of water, put it out and arms length and spin it about in a full circle. How many revolutions per second does it take to keep the water static? About 1-2. That is with very little rotational speed (RPS)

Take a standard 14 tire, which has a 12" radius. C = 3.14 * 12" = 37.68" or travel distance per tire revolution. Lets just say 1 yard distance to make it simple.

Take a mile = 1760 yards. Divide that by 60 for revolutions per minutes = about 29 revolutions per minute, divide that by 60 for revolutions per second = about 1/2.

so at :

1 MPH the tire travels about 1/2 revolution, or 1 1/2 foot/sec
2 MPH " " 1 revolution per second, 3 feet/sec
4 MPH 2 revolutions per second, 6 feet/sec
" :"
10 MPH 5 revolutions per second, 15 feet/sec

See if you can spin that glass at 5 revolutions per second.

Because of the amount of CF any displacement of the beads, due to the tire striking a pot hole, lets say, if it occurs, would likely be miliseconds, if at all. Your tire, traveling at 20 MPH, or 10 revolutions per second, would have reseated the beads in about how much tire travel distance? 1/2 rotation, less. None since they'd really not displace? Negligible.

At 20 MPH you'd travel 30 feet per second, and the blaancing would have corrected itself within how much distance/time?

I don't think with pot holes, or sudden movement, you have to worry at all.

The thing about the beads is that you start off with a fresh balance each time you come to a stop, and get going again.

Tire life extended, sounds logical, but IDK.

Yes, here at this site, for what-ever reason, when I use the go-back, it is always empty! That is what really surprised, and frustrated me.

those beads are using the same concept as what transports and buses use, only they use liquid or powder. my uncle has a small tire shop and was telling me about all the ways to ballance a tire. he wasnt able to fit my truck tires on his old ballancer(325 85 R16 Michelin X). as far as liquid balance goes, you can just use a little water. for a temporary fix in winter use prestone, but its hard on the tire. it wont be ballanced right away, but once you start rolling they will be
