It's probably nothing but...

My bike has been making a very weird noise right at 4000 RPM and ONLY at that point. To describe it I guess I can compare it to broken glass being rolled around in a metal tube? It appears to be coming from the front, and a friend of mine said it's probably just break-in noise but it isn't going away. If I am just under 4000 or just above then it disappears. Not that I am ever at 4000 RPMs for long, it is just a concern I have. Any ideas what this might be, and should I be apprehensive?

It could be the tilt sensor which is just under the screen, they do sometimes vibrate.

+1
sounds like it...
I put additional rubber washers behind mine to keep it quiet... yet allow for vibration damping.

There was a recall on some 06 models for loose tilt sensor bolts.
It could really suck if your engine dies mid corner leaned over.
Better check and be safe instead of sorry.

Yeah, like if I rev it a little there is a certain "resonate" rpm...can't remember the exact rpm...

It will sound like it is right at the front, behind the instruments...because that is where it is.

Mine always made a "ticka-ticka-ticka........" Not very loud, but it's an easy thing to fix so I did it. My TOS actually was floppy loose in it's bracket. I made some plastic washers out of bottle caps and put them in so that the rubber vibration damper would squeeze the TOS a tiny bit tighter in the bracket.

Funny thing, I hear no ticka-ticka when first starting now but it is still there when the bike warms up. No big deal. There's a few noises this thing makes and it did them all since new.

Just take off you windscreen. The TOS is right there - the little gray thing with a couple wires going to it. It's right under the part of the windscreen that is painted black. Listen to it with bike running and maybe the noise can be quieted. Some guys zip tie a black sponge over the TOS but I would not do this because then you will have something touching the paint under your windscreen and the paint will rub off.

I've heard numerous complaints about this noise. The two Kawi cruisers I've ridden make the same noise.

I hear mine rattling too. I might have to do that rubber washer mod myself. Does anyone have a pic of this sensor or the mods to improve it?

+1 on Diablo mod. I did the same. Just make sure it has larger inside diameter than steel sleeve inside of the rubber gromet.

I broke a tab off the front of my left duct cover way back and it would do that.

^^^That little dohicky that is supposed to slide into that shiny fork shaped bracket? Those things sorta suck. I already warned KN about those on his other thread.

it is the tipover sensor. i posted on this a while back, the easiest most effective fix i found was to wrap some insulation like rubber foam 1/8" thickness around the sensor and zip tie or tape it. they all make this noise. it is easy remove the windshield and there it is. the insulation on mine eliminated the noise altogether, or at least eliminated me from hearing it.

That's great to hear! I am glad it isn't something more serious. I barely notice it when riding because of my earplugs but I am going to take care of the problem regardless.
