You need a #2 phillips with a good head, either new or close to it. And you also need to keep the screwdriver straight in the screw heads. And most importantly you need heat. I used a soldering iron on the screwheads for a minute or so...the screws almost came out on their own. They looked like they've never been touched by a screwdriver

mine came out with a brand new craftsman #2 and no heat. I just gave them a little bit of a tap (not too hard) to set the phillips head in the screw and out they came without a hitch.

The phillips I used was a brand new #2 phillips with a 10" shaft. It has a black tip coated with some kind of rough coating to grip the x-slot on the screws. I heated it with a burnsomatic about 2" from the tip for maybe 4-5 minutes (this was in subzero air temp last winter) I heated it until I started to feel the warmth higher up on the shaft but thetip was hot enough to vaporize water. This was in the dead of Wisconsin winter but I don't think it could hurt if you did the same in warmer weather.
I held the hot screwdriver on the screw for two -three minutes. You have to melt the factory locktite. The screws were in there good and snug, but they came out without stripping at all. Just need some firm down pressure. I wouldn't put more than ~12 lbs of pressure on it because you do not want to bend the shaft the flies are attached to.
Be very careful with the hot screwdriver or what ever you use when you put it in the black plastic tubes. One touch and it would mean a hole melted in the side. A pistol type soldering gun will not fit - I tried. Soldering pen might work.
A good hot screwdriver held on the screw for an ample period of time is the most important part and I really think that grit finish helped to grab in those x-grooves.
Also, touch a magnet pick-up tool to the shaft of the screwdriver as you finish turning each screw out. If you try to use the magnet tool alone, it will also stick to the fly and everything else in there. You'll see what I mean. If you drop a screw, I believe the primary below it will prevent it from going into the throttle body ---but I didn't drop any. I really took my time.
By the time I finished the second fly, I realized I could get two screws out with one heating of the screwdriver -- goes to show you how long that thing stays hot. Don't be afraid that the screw is getting cold. Wait until it's good and hot and I bet all will come out quite easy.
One more tip - use a piece of bent wire to hook through the screw hole in the fly before you remove the second screw all the way. If you do that, you can prevent the fly from falling down to the primary below. Again, I'm sure you could retrieve a dropped fly with a magnet tool but that would also stick to the primary possibly pulling it open.
Take your time. I get flack for being a worry wart, wannabe mechanic but I haven't forked anything up yet either. I spent a whole day removing my flies.
A whole day????????!!!!!!!!! Yup, a whole day.

Nothing wrong with taking your time Rook I'm the same way.........VERY thorough. I'm a little too thorough to be a tech tho lol, thats why I didn't finish school to be a bike mech. Its not in my nature to rush and half-ass a job to keep the boss happy, so I woulda sucked in the industry I'm alway batting clean-up for my buds when we wrench together. I'm busy catching things they missed, tidying up wiring, and double checking things. I'm a little anal for sure in those areas
But my shit WORKS!!!
With your thinking man's approach and research you'll be fine in whatever you do to your bike
Us anal types may get ribbed a bit...but you know we're the kinda guys everybody wants working on their stuff

I have heard from several people that a PC is not necessary to run with flies out on a G2. They are rich enough everywhere with stock map. (In fact, I believe I recently read on another topic that Brock leans his map down compared to stock). My flies out G2 has run a couple hundred miles without a PC but I plan to get one pretty soon. I'm not worried about running lean with flies out but I want a PC to optimize my mostly stock bike and for future mods.
Some people claim they have run G1s for thousands of miles without a PC but I would definitely want to have it for an 06-07 bike.

I put over 8000 trouble free miles on mine without a pc3, and its plugs looked perfect. I just kept from cruising around between 3500 and 3900 rpms.
