Front sprocket removal
Riding weather will be here in a week and I've got the ZX out and am doing a few upgrades. I've sent the wheels out to have them polished, installed a smoke windscreen, heli bar risers, some carbon bits n pieces, a speedo healer and adjustable lowering links.
I'm now trying to change my front sprocket, but man oh man that nut does NOT want to come off! I have a fairly robust 1/2" impact gun but it will not budge. Before i borrow my son-in-laws 3/4 mondo torque impact, has anyone else had difficulty removing theirs??
I've removed a bunch over the years, but this one is impossibly tight, I've even tried heating it a bit in case they applied loctite at the factory.

Yes, it is trouble. I had to buy an upgraded impact to do mine..still 1/2" though.

It's not unusual for it to be that tight. I ended up using a long strong arm bar on mine with a piece of wood in the back tire, front of the bike against the wall, and wife stepping on the rear brake. I left the bike in neutral. I wouldn't feel comfortable backing it up against the tranny. If your chain and rear wheel are still off I'd wait to get them back on and back it up against the rear wheel with something stopping it from turning. It is normal thread, not reverse.

drained my buddies compressor twice with a retard strength 3/4" oem impact before mine wanted to move. i know that this probably goes without being said... but make sure that you've got the tab bent back on that big washer lol.

the easiest way I have found to break the sprocket loose is to have a buddy stand on the bike. Strape the rear tire down to keep it from rotating. One foot on the brake pedal, the other putting slight pressure on the ratchet handle to keep pressure on it and stop it from bouncing back when I smack it with a rubber mallet. Two good wHaCkS and it is loose. I have tried everything else (heat, breaker bars, 1200 ft/lb impact wrenches, etc) and the above method is the least time consuming and least aggravating I personally have found.
BE SURE TO PUT SOME ANTI-SEIZE GUNK ON THE THREADS BEFORE RE-INSTALL. I forgot the first few times I changed mine out. Since I have remembered to put it on the shaft, mine comes off by hand now........

Mine was difficult too. Tried a shortened air hose, pumped the compressor tank right up, it still wouldn't move. In the end we borrowed a brand new gun from the Snap On man.
Sensible remarks above about protecting the transmission, We had someone stood on the rear brake too.

Mine broke free with the trans in neutral. Ingersoll Rand rated for 1100 ft lbs. removal torque...

k thanks all. Looks like the best thing is to wait till the rear wheel is back on and use the monster torque snapon 3/4.

hold the rear brake down. It locks rear tire, so you dont spin or get the pull when you torque it. =)

I also understand that it could be bad on the tranny to use an impact wrench. I had a buddy stand on the rear brake and mine came off relatively easy. But then again my flies came out super easy too! It's clear to me that my bike just likes me a lot more then your bike likes you. I bet if you were to wash it, wax, and clean its air filter that sprocket nut would come off by itself!!!!!!!

nah...everybody knows its only the red zeds that have that additional lubricity built into them that makes stuff slide on and off so easy

I stepped on the rear brake myself and leaned over with the impact and went reverse, fwd, reverse, and it came right off easily.

First time removal is a nightmare,... and well beyond the manuf torque specs...
torque back on to spec and it will be smoother to get off nex time.

Maybe loctite on the threads, if so, a hand held torch will loosen the loctite stuff my melting it before attempting to loosen the nut.
