Drag testing 17/40 gears .....

After reading that Brock used 17/40 on his 2006 and on Ricky Gadson Super Street bike I had to give it a shot ... The biggest problem i have with my 09 zx14 at stock wheel base is wheelys in first gear when the flys opened fully ..Brock said he went with 17/40 gears to calm down the wheelys in first gear...With the stock gears i was able to go fast and cut some ok 60 foot times but good runs were far and few between ...Out of 5 runs with stock gears i would get one good run where i didn't wheely .. My wheelys caused me to chop the throttle , backing off the throttle kills any chance of a good pass ...Little wheelys are fine but i'm talking 10:00 Oclockers here ...I was so worried about wheelys i have been holding back the bike in fear of flipping or busting an oil pan ..

JesseJames ordered me up a 40 tooth rear sprocket and i got it installed for Weds night test and tune ...My first pass off the trailer i was still in fear of a wheely so i made a very easy pass 6.20 @ 119 ... Ok no wheely !!! I felt ok it's not going to wheely now so i can get on it a littler harder and see what happens ... Second pass 6.12 @ 121 , much better and still no wheely ...The Front tire is just skipping across the track, front end was very light but no air under the tire .. I made 3 passes all real close 6.12 6.12 6.14 all in the at 121 mph and change ...My 60s got better also 1.55 1.56 and 1.57 ...

Next mod will be a TRE to get the flys open faster ...Now that the wheel is staying down i feel i can use a little more lower end power ..With the flys in place i'm getting a bog and slow rev in the lower RPMs causing my 330 times to be a bit slow ... I would just pull the flys but Super sport class you have to leave them in place , but rules do say a TRE is ok ..

Mods are strapped lowered , Brocks Street Meg , NO P/C , stock air filter , stock tire ..
The bike runs strong for no P/C or tune ..

Yes for street driving it will run lean 2500 to 3500 ..But for the track i see no reason because i never see that RPM ...When i get up some more money i'm going to try the New PCV with auto tune ..

I thought you were launching right in that range?

You've got that thing moving for sure. Next year I am thinking about something 60" or shorter...

Anyway, I see 6.0's in your near future...

What is your goal?

I have moved the rpms up to 4000 and the motor is under no load ... So it should be fine ..For the street i will just unplug it .... I ran high 5.90s on my 06 stock wheel base and i'm looking to do the same or better with the 09 , better i hope ..

Thanks for a good report!

Question: Can you describe the launch? With this gearing, are you going full throttle on green and sliding the clutch or getting the clutch out quickly and modulating power with throttle, or ??? Clutch all the way out and throttle open where???

My first (and last) time out with 16/41, mine was a unicycle. Any tips are welcome.

Mine is an 08 setup like yours, except I have a PC and Brock's map.

I have a tip for you Lucky.

Go to a track and practice! if you could race at least once a week for 2 months, you would be running at least 6.20's or better. im going to the Cattle Ranch tomorrow, see ya on the Range.

Cool test Smokin. Keep em coming.

Lucky i do the short bike alot different than my long bike ... 4000 stage , slide the clutch and slowly add more power at the same time...Ballance between a bog and slipping the clutch to much ...Seat time is the Key till you build a feel that you can repeat without thinking about it .. On the short bike i'm holding the clutch much longer than my long bike and rolling the throttle on much slower ... Hope that helps ..

Lucky i have the same problem getting my feet back on the pegs ..The last few times on my short bike i keep my left on the peg... Looks a little funny staging the bike that way but it works for me ..I haven't missed 2 gear since i started doing it that way ...

good stuff lee... i wonder how well that gearing will work for those of us who are 180+ lbs... i may have to give it a shot after i get used to the pipe. i just don't like to change thigs often because i feel that it keeps me from learning the bike. the good news is that it wasn't a 50 dollar frisbee lol.

Any idea how much wheelbase I would gain from going from 16/42 gearing to 17/45 gearing.............also, would a 120 link chain fit with 17/45 gearing?

I also launch with my left Leg up on the peg. I'll be trying to get some better times tonight if the rain doesn't hamper things. I'd be happy if I get into the high 9's.

I have to get back to the stock gearing someday. The 16/41 combo just makes for a pogo stick of 1-2 gear experience.

Smokin how much would you say the 40t brought the rear wheel back?
Thanks for sharing the results of your test.

Sounds like your going to take a stab at SS?

Ignorant question here but....

Why gear the bike 1 tooth slower than stock? Why slow the bike down?
I figured drag racers would want it to be quicker and drop front teeth and add rear teeth. After 1st gear you still not going to accelerate as fast as say someone at 16/43 or 45.

Will someone explain please?

Thanks.

Torque control basically to keep the front end down. Most folks will make small changes in gearing incrementaly untill they find just the right balance.

Also, many racers want to cross the finish at the top of a given gear to achieve the fastest mph. If you are crossing the line just before touching the limiter, you may want to make a small change like going down 1 tooth in the rear to drop the revs slightly.

Not a Ignorant question at all .. If you wheely with a 17/41 you will never go fast ... The 17/40 in my case stopped the wheelys just like it did for Brock and Gadson .This extra tooth didn't slow the bike down at all, fact is it ran the same ET and MPH in worse air ...Now if i was doing a roll on race in second gear @ 60 MPH i would use 16/41 because i didn't need to worry about a wheely ..

Last year I tried 17/40 for quarters on stock wheelbase. I was geared for top speed runs but it was too windy so I decided to try quarters. The 14 is so easy to launch, I was using around 3,500rpm, made sure the motor didn't bog down off the line, kept the revs rising and didn't get any wheelies at all. Best ET was 9.84 and I'm way out of practise.
My take on this is that it must be possible to get lower ET with a lower gear, one that gives max rpm in 4th at the end of the quarter. It will be more difficult but the art is in throttle control.

Thanks for the post Lee. With my long legs, it is especially hard to get my feet on the pegs, so I tried it with my left foot up. I received so much crap about it that I just quit trying it. Nice to read that so many reputable folks try it as well. I was going to ask if the roll-ons kinda sucked, so thanks for clearing that up. I'm still trying to get used to the 16t at stock wheelbase, but getting more used to it and dealing with the wheelies a bit better.
