Smaller Front Fender/Lost MPH?

I've heard of some reports of lower mph at the track when using a 10R front fender. If anyone has experienced that, please provide some feedback here.

I'm trying to do some reasearch since I am going to be testing a smaller fender. Some feedback I have from elsewhere tells me that the larger fender of the 14 may not make a measurable difference in speed. Aerodynamics can be complex.

Any info appreciated, thanks.

I'd think "maybe" a difference at the Texas mile, but nothing in a 1/4 mile.

I am going to try mine at Maxton, depending on what I see in the 1/4.

The fender I'm fitting is very small, from a 1098:

I'm sure a few guys here have run the 10R fender at the track, and I'd love to get their feedback.

I had gotten a report from one of the guys stating that with the zx10r fender they had lost 1-2 mph trap speed in the 1/4 mile.

I can't remember who.
I personally have experienced drop in top end top speed accelleration naturaly... just brocks pipe, and no fly's for power adders.

I would say that you will definately lose some top speed due to the fact the 14 fender is designed to wick the air around the bike, whereas the zx10 fender allows more air to enter the rad, which would increase the aerodynamic drag somewhat.

For top speed, I would definately say the small fender will cause lower speeds.
For 1/4 mile I would agree that a very slight change in trap speed might be seen.
For the 1/8 mile I would suggest the speeds are not high enough to cause any effect,

If anyone has a 10 fender to donate to Lee or Pat, I would donate the brackets for testing purposes.

I would chose Lee, or Pat as thay have proven to be the most consistent with our bike.

As long as there isn't a head wind....its usually within less than 1 MPH every pass.

I looked on Ebay, but no reasonable prices for 10 fenders right now. Hopefully someone else will donate one for testing...

The only reason I didn't buy Lyle's brackets is that I need to lower the fender anyway for a 60 series tire...

If there is no change in 1/4 mph, I will definitely be able to accurately test my small fender at Maxton with repeatable results.

Here are my runs from October last year

10/25/2008 17:24 189.65925
10/26/2008 8:40 189.19005
10/26/2008 10:45 185.46414 (changed windscreen, headwind)
10/26/2008 13:29 189.39837
10/26/2008 14:47 190.76122 (pulled strap down more, different tuck)

Because you are in top gear for around 10 seconds, you are really tapping out the mph and there is little variance without changes to the bike.

I would think the 10 fender would slow the bike in a mile run ...( More air hitting the Rad ) Everybody says with a zx10 fender the bike runs cooler so more air must be getting to the rad ... I'll be happy to test one in the 1/4 if if you like but i don't think at 154 mph we will see much difference ... I could be wrong ..

Hey Lee,
Thanks for the offer.
We already have things set up with Pat.
I would be satisfied with either of you testing, Pat just got the internet holeshot is all.

I may still be interested in a second trial though, and will definately keep you in mind Bro!

Thanks
Lyle

Will ship out on Wednesday morning when I get back home guys!
Will look into the quickest reasonable mode of shipping.
The brackets themselves weigh under 4 oz., and were designed for 1/4" clearance over the stock tire.

Hmmm.

I gotta ask why do we see land speed bikes with the front wheel almost fully enclosed.

Therefore I gotta believe that the smaller fender would be a bad thing, speedwise.

No proof on my part, mind you... just a thought

I've used both at the dragstrip, and no difference as far as I can see
except the bike cools down a whole lot faster with the 10 fender.
Now I'm sure it will make a big difference in LSR events.
