please tell me what is going on with this oil
i started tearing down my bike today and i found oil on the left side of the motor. top of motor is dry but its all on the side. did this come from the air box or what do u guys think?

Could be the airbox, there is an drain/catch and tube running down that side of the motor. I've never gotten any oil out of mine but I have heard of others finding some in it. I also heard overfilling the engine with oil can cause it to accumulate there too.

its common for 14s to leak there for every year so far, check the threads.
Mine went in for warranty 3 times for that exactt same thing and the fix lasted 2000-3000 miles each time and it did it again. Part #s replaced, bolts shaved, new gaskets, washers added and sealant, etc etc etc etc
Although I'm sure if I'd have finally took it to smokinZX14 it'd have been fixed but I had enough and said good riddance to the bike

I can give you the parts Kawasaki replaced that did NOT permanently fix the left side leak problem:
1st attempt was the obvious gasket where the leak was coming from
2nd trip
6 each Ring-O, Head cover bolt- 92055-1616
1 each Gasket head cover 11061-0195
1 each Cover, Head, FS Black 14091-0494-11E
(HEAD COVER and HEAD COVER GASKET is Japanese for ("valve cover" and "valve cover gasket")
and sealant-
3rd trip I can't remember nor kept a list but they tried new gasket plus sealant, washers, shaved bolts, etc etc etc
4th time I dumped the bike

Chances are you're overfilling with oil. You should only be in the middle of the sight glass. Any more then that and oil will accumulate in the airbox and spit out all over the front of the engine case.

mine has a little bit of a seep around the valve cover in that same spot. the glorious thing about a bike with fairings is that you can keep an eye on the oil level, whipe it with a rag every now and then and no one ever knows that it's doing it.
think of it this way... now you can start riding with harleys and actually have their respect

Thats for sure the valve cover gasket. I caught mine early and fixed it , I guess, for now, Gasket, sealant....We will see

One of the buddies I occasionally ride with has an 06 R1… He has a noticeable leak from his engine (the reason that I noticed it was we traded bikes at one point in time and I got oil spray on my left pantleg… new jeans figures.
From what he tells me his R1 has leaked since it was new but only after he does an extended wheelie (from what he tells me it does not like being on one wheel to long).
Sounds like BS to me but I thought I would mention it!

Looks just like my 08 did. It was the cam cover/ valve cover gasket. I orderd the updated gasket, but it was the same one that came on my bike out of the factory and I did not want to replace a bad gasket with a bad gasket. So I just put thin washers under all 6 bolts and tourqed to spec without removing the cover and cleaned the oil off the motor. It has been about 1000 miles now and lots of heat up cycles with not the slightest sign of leaking. Took me about 1:30 from start to finish. It looks cramped in there but you can get the cam cover bolts off and back on. You will need a low profile or small torque wrench to get to one of them (I think it was the front middle one). Use M10 washers.

mine just started leaking at 12000 miles,,its an 08,,does kawasaki have a recall on this issue,,,my warranty runs out next month,,

Well My "hardy-able brand" hasn't leaked a drop in 20,000 miles. So I guess that blows that theory out of the water.

No, but they did update the gasket, but it did nothing to fix the problem. Washers are working great for me.

I think the washer trick works best on the new style gasket, new or used, mine had about 7000 miles on it when it started leaking bad, it was always damp with oil in that area right from the showroom floor. I did not removed the cover just put the washers on and the leak stoped. You can see and feel that the gasket is nice and snug after installing the m10 washers.

I Have a 2006 and my brother also has a 2006 zx14 both bikes leaked at the valve cover gasket checked valve clearance all was good there at the time my brother checked his the update for the rubber gasket under the bolts for the valve cover gasket was not available he used a thin washer under the bolt and that worked no more leaks and the update was available when I checked mine and I used the new rubber gaskets and no more leaks on my bike I would suggest if checking valves to replace if not just use washers so you dont have to pull valve cover.

Got my '06 sitting at the kawi dealers right now for valve cover leak. He's gonna try to get warranty coverage as they all seem to do it. I'll know tomrrow if they will or not. My buds was done 3 times before it quit leaking. By the third time they finally got the new updated gasket then he sold it so I don't know if it really worked or not. We'll see if kawi comes through or not.

3000psi,,ok let me see if i understand this washer theory,,,,the bolt has a shoulder,, so u put a washer under the bolt to shorten to length of the shoulder so it puts more tension on the gasket,,how thick are the washers u use???,,do u put washers under all the valve cover bolts??i am just pissed off that i have to take all that plastic off
