Ya know when you look at how that oil pan is made it is really a stupid design from the factory..
Glad your ok, a guy died out here not too long ago from a cracked oil pan...

Thanks for sharing your experience with us and making us aware of the wheelie/lowered risk. I am really glad you are relatively uninjured.

I am in the process of lowering mine too. I got stiffer springs fro the front from race tech. but and I want to use the bike for land speed racing and drag racing I don't want the cut pan. has any one had any expeerances with the travel limiter blocks from schnitz? If so How well do they work.
And Very Gland you are ok. and the Bike too. I know you put alot of work into it. good luck fixing it. and getting the 8

Glad you’re okay, seriously. I know exactly what you’ve experienced all to well. What helps me is putting your feet on the pegs after 2nd gear but seeing you had shifting problems that caused a lil confusion. Had you had your feet on the pegs you would’ve been able to avoid the impact of the front slaming down so hard, that’s what shook you up and caused the loss of control.
Again, two things I’ve learned from similar experiences was raise up on the pegs with your legs when the front end pops up and concentrate on keeping the front wheel straight when fish tailing and you’ll be fine. Having your feet on the ground during a wheelie like that puts your at a disadvantage by having your face dangerously close to your gas tank and such.
I’m far from an expert but these are just tips that works perfect for me. I could fish tail all day and I’d never fall, may sound weird but its true, just did it two weeks ago on a patch of ice and kept on riding as if nothing ever happened.

This is why i dont like the sliding forks and strap it down as much as you can, you really lose any travel in front and have no rebound.
sorry to hear about the spill, but at least you're ok, Sean!
I took my oil pan out on the street, just on a road inperfection. luckly i knew it happend right away and was able to walk my bike home the half mile or so. There still is a trail of oil, and my friends never let me forget about it!

If you don't want a cut pan you can have the drain relocated to the rear of the pan.
Lowered ZX14s need a pan mod, cut or at least a relocated plug.

I too cracked 2 oil pans before finally going with a cut one from Clems Kawasaki. It works great and I should have done it in the first place but I was in a hurry to get it back together. They now have modified ones "in stock" for exchange for $125.00

It is a scary experience when you hit hard enough and know the pan is busted but cant do anything but hold the clutch in a slide along trying to stop. I could always set the big wheelies down easy but if you hit the rev limiter or chop the gas it is a crap shoot.
If this happens to you on the strip dont forget to pull the clutch in, thumb the kill switch, dont touch the back brake, force both feet down on the track to help stabilize, very slightly steer toward the center of the track not the outside wall. Dont touch the front brake at all until the front and back wheel are in line with each other, and when you do it needs to be the slightest touch. If the back tire starts coming around like it usually does, let off the brake and let the clutch slide in a little to pull the back wheel back inline some and pull the lever in again. You may not be able to use the front brake at all depending on how bad the oily tire is sliding on the track surface. Dont worry about stopping the bike too soon, just keep it upright. Mine slammed down at the 60 ft mark and the bike stopped 320ft from there. Only got to use the brake the last 20ft of it. DONT PANIC.THUMB THE KILL. RIDE IT OUT LIKE YOU HAVE NO BRAKES. DONT STEER TOO MUCH AND DONT GO TOWARDS THE WALL IF POSSIBLE. The track operators might get pissed at you but f@ck them. You learn this stuff roadracing and running off track onto wet grass, it is almost exactly the same feeling I have lived to experience.

I scared the shit out of myself on my stock suspension bike in the fall and dropped the wheel back down real hard (actually found the back break while the front end was in the air)… stupid thing to do I almost crashed, not to mention the fact that I mesed up my neck.
After reading the thread I went to check my oil pan… and nothing, either I did not bring it down as hard as I thought… (Adrenaline is a crazy thing some times), or it’s not that big of an issue until you drop / strap the bike.

Glad you are ok bro. This is why I invested in the Adam's 1.5" billet pan. Yea it was $850, but I have 4" of ground clearance (under the oil pan) with my bike slammed and strapped.
Looks like that Michelin was hooking its ass off!!!!

Just found out my buddy went down in Hattiesburg on Saturday at the Fat Tuesday race on his 14. Exact same thing happened, wheelie/plug pushed into the pan/out of control.
His bike is set up almost identical to mine, its about 10" over, but he still had a stock pan.
I called him and he is real sore, went down at about the 330' mark. Is bike isn't too bad, he thinks everything damaged is replaceable. He did say that his frame sliders helped save alot of damage from occuring.
So to everyone reading this, if you are going to lower your bike, whether street riding or drag racing, please do something about your oil pan. This is becoming a common occurance. Happening on a regular basis at my local track too.
